This has been bugging me for a while.
I have been wondering how much has been spent in Iraq vs how much damage Hurricane Katrina cost...

Yeah...there's no requirement for hurricane insurance, most places.

The insurance is irrelevant. All you're really talking about is who is footing the bill. In either case a substantial portion is coming from the U.S. government.

Also, the hurricane was going to do X amount of damage to lives or property whether you had insurance or not.

Contrast this with the Iraq war. A completely under estimated pricetag at the beginning for a completely optional occurance.
