kallend 2,182 #1 July 3, 2006 From AVWEB today: It's now been almost five years since American Airlines Flight 587 went down in New York City, which the FAA sees as the last "major" airliner crash in the U.S. In 1997, not long after TWA Flight 800 exploded off Long Island and ValuJet 592 plowed into the Florida Everglades, Al Gore headed a White House commission that set the goal of reducing accidents by 80 percent over the next decade. According to a USA Today report (http://www.usatoday.com/travel/flights/2006-06-29-air-safety-side_x.htm), we've almost reached that goal. In fact, if you accept USA Today's methodology, your chances of being killed while flying on a domestic airliner within the U.S., Canada, Europe or Japan in the past five years dropped to zero. ... Anyway, what with inventing the internet, saving the environment and preventing plane crashes, it's a surprise he couldn't prevent a few of his supporters' votes from being stolen in 2000.... kenneth21441 0 #8 July 4, 2006 And with that we must also acknowledge that the US Airlines is the worlds safest in that no we dont let passengers carry box cutters and every where else in the world's airlines are dangerous. Ok this was pre-9/11 but then again the ideal was the same to carry out such attacks. Was he not also at the helm (sort of speaking) when the bombings happened in Africa in 99 and the USS Cole in Yeman. What did we do there? Enough to say that we as a whole were not ready for him or anyone else for that matter. What about that former VP Qualye who was underscored by a 14 year old in a spelling match??? I just love those out of office VP's. Sure cant wait for the book and/ or movie deal. Ill have to get a copy to heat my home this winter. Kennedy 0 #15 July 4, 2006 QuoteGORE: Well, I will be offering - I'll be offering my vision when my campaign begins. And it will be comprehensive and sweeping. And I hope that it will be compelling enough to draw people toward it. I feel that it will be. But it will emerge from my dialogue with the American people. I've traveled to every part of this country during the last six years. During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the Internet. I took the initiative in moving forward a whole range of initiatives that have proven to be important to our country's economic growth and environmental protection, improvements in our educational system. During a quarter century of public service, including most of it long before I came into my current job, I have worked to try to improve the quality of life in our country and in our world. And what I've seen during that experience is an emerging future that's very exciting, about which I'm very optimistic, and toward which I want to lead. Sounds to me like he claimed to have "created the internet."witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*
kelpdiver 2 #16 July 4, 2006 Jason - these long winded defenses (Snopes has one too) seem to be trying real hard to make it look obvoiusly false, but it all comes down to the phrase "created the internet." He should havre said he was a major force in *funding* the creation of what became the internet. Doesn't sound as good, important as it was. Hope you're having a good summer out at Davis. Wish I weren't grounded.
billvon 3,132 #17 July 5, 2006 >Sounds to me like he claimed to have "created the internet." If this board had existed back then, conservatives here would have been blaming all the problems of the Internet (spam, congestion, lack of privacy etc) on "Al Gore's Internet" - as many conservatives back then did. Now that it's wildly successful, no conservative wants Gore associated with it. Can't have it both ways.

I'm no more a democrat then I am a republican, in the choice between two bad choices I will choose the evil that provides me with more freedom. Bring back the republican party that tried to legalize weed (Newt 1984) and I'll vote for that evil. They are all full of shit and I love to watch evryone stick up for their team as if these folks give a shit about you and not the power your support provides. I threw that link out there because the facts go some ways towards supporting what Gore said. The people who developed the basic protocols that allow the Internet to function agree: ------------- Al Gore was the first political leader to recognize the importance of the Internet and to promote and support its development. No one person or even small group of persons exclusively "invented" the Internet. It is the result of many years of ongoing collaboration among people in government and the university community. But as the two people who designed the basic architecture and the core protocols that make the Internet work, we would like to acknowledge VP Gore's contributions as a Congressman, Senator and as Vice President. No other elected official, to our knowledge, has made a greater contribution over a longer period of time.
