GogglesnTeeth 6 #1 June 27, 2006 [rant] So if you live in the Hurricane prone part of the U.S., you know that you are now nearly a month into hurricane season. Today, the "powers that be" released the "hurricane plan" for the TV station and it's employees. I have huge issues with it...... here are a few of the highlights!!!! • All employees will be expected to report to work unless told differently. Schedules will be put together for each department, however due to the nature of a hurricane you may be at the station for an extended period of time. • Failure to report to work is a violation of company policy, subject to disciplinary action, up to and including, termination. • When reporting to work, plan on being at the station for several days. Bring essential items listed under “Personal Provisions List.” • If an immediate threat is imminent to the building, all employees shall move to the hallways between the administration offices and the studio. This is designated as the “SAFE PLACE.” Do not leave the area until an all clear has been given. • Vacations and days off are subject to cancellation. If this happens employees are expected to report into work. If you are on vacation and we call you back – you must report to work. Yes, I understand that I work in the news media, and it's our job to report the news, keep people informed, etc..... But this document says little about the employees personal safety. The company requires us to be at work even if we don't feel "safe" to be there. Sorry, I don't feel like risking my life for my job!!!! Sure, I skydive, and jump as often as possible, but I also wear a parachute, and only jump when I feel it is as safe as possible. If I don't feel safe, I don't jump! Gawain 0 #2 June 27, 2006 Funny thing with some jobs. My job required me to be in unsafe situations contiuously. Of course I volunteered for it, so I can't gripe too much. It's a free market dude. Get another job. There are intrinsic expectations with some lines of work and there are willing individuals to do the job. You see people on TV standing at a slant reporting on conditions during the actual storms. Yes it's dangerous, yes they chose the line of work.So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light! It's like working in a hospital, for the police force, or as an insurance adjustor. Comes with the job. Andy9o8 2 #5 June 27, 2006 "Neither rain, nor sleet nor gloom of the night, etc., etc." Some jobs are "essential services". Been there done that myself, in a public sector job. Shitty weather, holidays, etc - you suck it up or get another job. Local TV/radio news during a public emergency certainly qualifies as "essential services." Gawain 0 #6 June 27, 2006 QuoteWe do not have hurricanes up here Just lots-n-lots-n-lots-n-lots-n-lots-n-lots-n-lots-n-lots of rain. Of course, here in DC, we've been deluged with about 11" of rain in recent days.So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light! MarkM 0 #7 July 1, 2006 Our company uses a volunteer staff for hurricanes called "storm troopers" and they get bonus pay for sticking it out through the storm for however many days it lasts. It works pretty well.
bodypilot90 0 #8 July 1, 2006 unlike the plan in or lack of it in Nagin'villle. Here in Florida my job is transfered to civil defence. I make sure the generators at the schools and shelters work and are filled with fuel. Making sure everyone is safe as possible. I don't mind. Someone has to do it. Even when it means i have to be the first up with shutters. It sucks putting them up in high winds and rain
