A question for the Brits.

Recommended Posts

OK, so we get the views of our Americam 'cousins' on the handgun an quite often but lets hear yours. My personal stance is Handguns should be allowed for sports shooting and should be registered and regulated. Whats your opinion?
(Brits only voting please, but anyone feel free to post)

I used to be against allowing people to posess guns but having worked for police for just over 2 years I think people should have the right to protect themselves in the worst case scenario. I think the trouble is if gun posession was allowed in the country it would be too much change too quick.

How is it fair that I could be robbed, even in my own home, without a fair fight? If we were allowed I'd m ake sure I was better equipped and better trained than any scumbag could be.

Of ocurse this would all be subject to vetting procedures :P

I think that the incidents which led to our current draconian laws were unusual and exposed faults in our firearms laws.

I also think that the changes in law in response to Hungerford and Dunblane were ill-thought, and more focussed on obtaining soundbites for politicians than to address the actual problems.

I'd therefore like to see handguns allowed along with the removal of restrictions on magazine-fed weapons.

I'd also like to see firearms ALL licensed as firearms. An end to the Shotgun-Licence. If it goes bang, it's a gun.

In effect, IF you are a "suitable person", and can show good cause to hold a particular firearm, then you should be able to hold it!

Mike.

I'd agree with that. I'd be interested from hearing from the four people who voted keep the ban to hear the reason why they voted that way.

I effect, IF you are a "suitable person",

Who defines suitable?

It's actually defined in the Firearms Acts. Generally speaking it's no serious convictions, nothing detrimental known to the applicant's character, mentally stable, etc... In effect, a normal, law-abiding, mature, reasonably intelligent, responsible person. Somebody that you'd trust with a gun. There's tens of thousands of such folk in Britain who've held firearms without incident for years, from which 2 fuckwits spoiled it.

Have a look at "Firearms Act" on a .gov.uk website.

The local police perhaps, after doing a background check.

except...

.... [cough] skydivers[cough][cough];)

Ouch:D:D

Actually I have not found that people stereotyped me for being a skydiver but admittedly I may have just been lucky. Funny thing actually I am trying to get on my wifes employee medical insurance and I of course disclosed everything:S yet they grilled me about having done scuba while completely overlooking the skydiving. Go figure.

The best so far..£158.00 from the British Moutaineering Council (but you also have to join the BMC)

Membership Cost: £28.50
Insurance Cost £158.00
Total Cost £186.50

I'll go with this one I think.
