Yep, just saw Senator Santorum on Fox & Friends this morning. Why more people aren't yelling from the rooftops is what I find interesting. :|

It's pretty obvious. "Bad Intel" is a more credible explanation of the untruths told by Bush & Co in 2002-2003 than to claim that this obsolete and unusable junk is what they were really talking about. They would look (even more) stupid claiming that this junk is the hoard of WMDs that present "imminent danger" mentioned in the 2003 SOTU or Powell's UN speech.

Hi John,

I just thought you ought to know that apparently arguing the point in these threads has now become somewhat passe.

The appropriate (safe) response for this thread would be for us to discuss something like "The drainage characteristics of the Pripet Marshes in Springtime"!:S

The actual appropriate arguments to the responses in this thread can cause insanity! Stick to the Pripet Marshes discussion if you want to stay safe!

Mike.

The Pripet Marshes killed my entire family. Of course you would want to discuss the drainage characteristics of such a vile place. I expect it from someone like you. :|

Sorry. I don't believe the Pripet Marshes story - neither did Keitel. (What are the Pripet Marshes anyway)

Nice to know you "know" why people avoid this forum. Have you taken a poll? Can you provide one shred of evidence to your claim? Perhaps they avoid it (if it's true they do) because of posts like yours that claim to want intelligent debate and then fail to deliver.

Holy shit, it is now a meta-debate. That is freaking awesome.

Just doing my part to break new ground.

Typical left-wing liberal crypto-commie response!

Instead of admitting your familys inability to swim through mud, you choose to blame the government for not intervening, the invading army for not moving on it's original schedule, Government lies and shifting responsibility, Etc...

ANYTHING to AVOID accepting YOUR familys OWN shortcomings.

I'd expect that of someone who by their OWN admission (and by virtue of their survival) has NO FIRST-HAND EXPERIENCE of these marshes!>:(

I was THERE man. I saw that damn ooze swallow my whole family. It did not help that the local MP actually PUSHED them in. Some kind of deal with a nearby corporation.

So don't you talk to ME about first hand experience!

Do you really think that there is an expiration date on this "obsolete and unusable junk" like a gallon of milk?
If so, maybe you wouldn't mind having the stuff disposed of in your neighborhood.

I designed a widget that measures the turbidity of the marsh water. Just my little part. The problem is the testing is being used by pharmaceutical company's to make war gas or something. Or is it poo gas, I can never keep those straight.

Just follow the money.

By then the Lefties will have time to run to CNN etc. to find out what to think. Sweet Dreams. ;)

I don't need to "run" anywhere to see that this is what it is. It's a story about finding some old, useless stuff that even the adminstration doesn't claim to be of any significance and not war related. And that it's going to be used by those egg faced war proponents as PROOF of the imminent threat that Saddam posed and worth every life and dollar we've sacrificed. I mean it IS an election year and isn't (P)Rick getting a bit nervous?

Yes, there is an "expiration date". And secondly, we went to war for WMD's, no wait, liberation, no wait, WMD's....not for pollutants.

Oh yea, I forgot to mention. Kudos to FOX for that great, non-misleading fair and balanced headline:D

I already live near stockpiles of the stuff, and there's also an ongoing disposal operation. I wouldn't mind.

>Brings many questions to mind.

Like "how man people will believe anything politicians say if it agrees with what they desperately want to believe?" We've known about the traces of degraded Sarin in warheads for three years now. It reinforces the finding that Saddam Hussein did, in fact, end his WMD programs when the UN demanded he do so (and imposed sanctions.)

Aha!! It also shows that he did not destroy his stockpiles though. It is relatively easy to remix the chemical agents (vs. maintain a nuke). Even in their degraded form, they are still deadly.

There were a few reports prior to this "declassified" report, but nothing of the magnitude outlined.

Despite the age issue, the political element to this would have been spun way out of control if this was revealed even a year ago. :S So, I understand why this wasn't spoken of for that reason, I'm curious about other ideas that may have tightened the lid.

Damn. Sorry. You got me feeding your fetish again! I had been in a discussion with someone else in this forum and we were actually exchanging some respectful dialog. Who would have believed that!!! I even learned a couple of things. I let my guard down. Hope you enjoyed it. Stroke on!;)

I gave you my take - claiming this junk represents the missing WMDs that were an "imminent" threat would make the administration look even more stupid.

>Aha!! It also shows that he did not destroy his stockpiles though.

Nope, sorry. From the report:

“While a small number of old, abandoned chemical munitions have been discovered, ISG judges that Iraq inilaterally destroyed its undeclared chemical weapons stockpile in 1991.”

The only way they will get any traction on this is through ignorance - through people who believe what they say without reading the report they claim to be quoting.

May 18, 2004:

Sarin Gas Shell Possibly Found In Iraq
A top U.S. military official in Iraq told the press Monday an artillery shell that may have contained the nerve agent sarin exploded near a U.S. military convoy in Baghdad recently. Former UN weapons inspector Hans Blix said the shell was likely a stray weapon possibly from the first Gulf War and is not likely a sign that Saddam Hussein had chemical weapons before the U.S. invasion.

-----------------------

On May 2, 2004 a shell containing mustard gas, was found in the middle of street west of Baghdad. The Iraq Survey Group investigation reported that it had been previously "stored improperly", and thus the gas was "ineffective" as a useful chemical agent. Officials from the Defense Department commented that they were not certain if use was to be made of the device as a bomb.[40]

I wonder if any of those poo poing this report and calling the weapons "old" were involved in the outrage and madness of the "old" weapons that were stored in Colorado? Hhhhmmmmmmm?

Hmmm....we have known about the Sarin, but not the mustard gas if I'm not mistaken. From open source info at any rate.

It brings the following points and queries to mind for me:

- 500 warheads found - how many are still out there and where are they?
- Saddam's regime obviously did not have control over its WMDs
- Given the above fact, the U.S. should never again give any country WMD's unless the circumstances are extraordinary. Even then. This is just not good policy.
- Why would any military organization be careless w/WMDs unless they knew they could get more from some other source, indiginous or otherwise?
- Of the warheads undoubtedly still out there, what is the status of the gas/agents contained? What would the fallout be if one were used?

Among others. I am surprised the report didn't get more attention. Certainly newsworthy.

No buts. From the report:
