Posse Comitatus in the UK

Recommended Posts

This article is about a United States statute prohibiting the use of the armed forces for law enforcement. For other uses see Posse comitatus (disambiguation).
The Posse Comitatus Act is a United States federal law (18 U.S.C. § 1385) passed in 1878 after the end of Reconstruction. The Act was intended to prohibit Federal troops from supervising elections in former Confederate states. It generally prohibits Federal military personnel and units of the United States National Guard under Federal authority from acting in a law enforcement capacity within the United States, except where expressly authorized by the Constitution or Congress. The Posse Comitatus Act and the Insurrection Act substantially limit the powers of the Federal government to use the military for law enforcement.

The original act referred only to the United States Army. The Air Force was added in 1956, and the Navy and the Marine Corps have been included by a regulation of the Department of Defense. This law is often mentioned when it appears that the Department of Defense is interfering in domestic disturbances.

But I still don't get what you are pushing at. Do you mean you think the US faorces should police in Britan? Or do you mean the UK forces should police Britan or do you mean something else totaly?

If you post something later like "HA HA I'm drunk as a fucker LA LA LA ShockedLaughLaugh", we'll know what happened.

You're right. I did a bit of socializing prior to this post. If I had to count how many I had, it would have required taking my shoes off, and there's no way that was happening without physically injuring myself :$:$:D

This poll was done on a spur of the moment in response to
mr2mk1g's reply that follows:

um... I hate to break it to you but all of the above rights also apply to people "effecting or assisting in the lawful arrest of offenders or suspected offenders or of persons unlawfully at large."

I promise to read further into the definition of Posse Comitatus, as soon as this raging hangover passes. Next time, I'm going to drink shoeless, that way I can keep track of how many I've had :$

It once took me a couple of days of explaining in PM's to someone on here quite what I had meant when I said I had posted because I was "pissed".

See in the UK, "pissed" can mean angry but would more commonly mean "drunk"; very very drunk.

Hence the confusion. My American friend thought I'd said I posted because I was angry. I hadn't - I was just drunk... very very drunk.
