Spending on guns rises to more than $2b during 2005

Americans spent more than $2 billion on guns and ammunition in 2005, showing the nation's fascination with firearms is not fading despite concerns raised by gun-control advocates.

The National Shooting Sports Foundation on Monday touted a U.S. Department of Treasury report that said sales of firearms and ammunition increased by 2.6 percent in 2005, while other federal agencies are finding fewer gun-related deaths and crimes. In 2005, Americans purchased 4.7 million new guns, bringing the estimated total of citizen-owned guns to 290 million...

Guy, you still have all your toys at hands, can play around as long as you want, where's your problem???

So you're saying I shouldn't worry about all the high-profile politicians and all the organizations that would like to ban private gun ownership?

I think your Hitler used the same kind of psychology on the Jews: Don't worry, it's just a train ride! Don't worry, it's just a shower!

Here's my speech on that.

"Godwin's Law" is just a piss-poor excuse to claim "victory" when someone doesn't have any logic or facts to rebut an argument. Its invocation is actually a sign of losing the debate.

Healthy debate often involves comparing something to extreme examples, and Hitler's regime is the most prominent of such in recent history. Such analogies are useful in examining certain things.

But other extreme examples can also certainly be found: Pol Pot, the Japanese occupation of countries in WWII, Idi Amin, and so forth. Yet analogies to these alternatives don't prompt a similar declaration of "victory". And no one proposes a whole list of things that can't be mentioned in a debate, as that would be ludicrous.

If they don't like someone's comparison to Hitler or Nazis, they should refute it with facts and logic.

So the whole "Godwin's Law" thing is bologna, and anyone who claims "victory" with it really doesn't have an argument.

I didn't claim "victory"; I happen to agree with you on gun rights; and I'm pretty sure Hitler was German, not Italian. :P

Inflation?

It's the actual number of guns too, not just the total dollar amount.

with gun prices increasing much more quickly than inflation (most of my are priced a couple hundred dollars higher now), it's a fair question to ask.

The article said that handgun sales increased 3% - taken literally that should mean number of guns, but it could still be in dollars.

Nothing validates Godwin's Law like a long, impassioned defense of why something IS really just as bad as Hitler.

Aren't you the guy who makes constant comparisons between Pat Robertson/Amenjibberjabber and Tim McVeigh vs. the THOUSANDS of arab terrorists like him? What law does that validate?

You're lucky there's no Bullshit Comparison law, or you'd never see the light of day again. :| :)

No, I don't. Don't put words in my mouth, JR. You know my point of view, I know yours.

BTW: It's not "my" Hitler, I do not have any relationship with him.

What is your glorious leader telling the troops before dispatching them into death in Iraq? Guys, it's just like a promenade: Walk around and enjoy the exotic environment.

Lies left and right.

I didn't say that gun-control was as bad as Hitler. I said that ignoring threats from people who are trying to take away your rights, is a dangerous and foolish thing to do.

Analogies and parables really seem to confuse some people, who can't keep them in context with the discussion.

Another meaningless reply from the great white German hunter.

What sources do you think I used?

Was there something incorrect about what I posted? If so, specify it and explain.

How would you know how fast I was going?

If my brain is going too fast for you to keep up, then maybe you should slow down and think more while you're reading.

I agree that it's a fair question. And I answered it correctly.

The news story was a bit confusing, with the title talking about total dollar sales, but then the detail was talking about the percentage of increase in the number of guns sold, without making the switch clear.

More details below, for those that don't take my word for it:

NSSF: "Gun Sales Rise as Crime, Accident Rates Fall"

BATF: "Annual Firearms Manufacturers And Export Report"

"No, I don't" what? You don't think gun owners should worry about all the people trying to ban and restrict them? If so, why not? Don't gun owners deserve to fight for their rights just like everyone else?

I didn't put words in your mouth - I asked a question. See that little squiggly mark with a dot under it at the end of the sentence? That's called a "question mark", which denotes that the sentence is a question.
