MRE's

Recommended Posts

Last night I was underground taking gas tests that are routine on this job. I test for NO2, CO, O2 and lower explosive limits on gasses. I returned to the surface and went into the doghouse [lunchroom] and set the gas tester on the table when the alarms started going off. there was a guy cooking a burrito with one of those heating packs from an MRE, I picked up the tester and walked up and setit on the table by the heater package and it immediately climbed to a reading of 252 ppm carbon monoxide! At 40 ppm the alarm sounds and we clear the area to fresh air. pretty bad, hasnt the military realized that these could be potentially hazardous to troops. Carbon monoxide displaces oxygen in the blood stream and has a cumulitive affect.
Experience is a difficult teacher, she gives you the test first and the lesson afterward

Not only that, but those heaters also dispense hydrogen as a by-product of the heating process (initiated by adding water to the bag...that simple). So, the gas is also flammable and we in my unit had fun making little boom-boom toys when we were bored. :P:)
So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh
Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright
'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life
Make light!

They'd only be dangerous in a relatively small space with little/no ventilation - sort of the like the afteraffects of eating the burrito! ;)

CO is bad, but goes away reasonably fast with exposure to fresh air.

I have no knowledge of the effect of crushing two MRE heater packs, adding them to a 1/4 full liter water bottle, then putting the cap on and throwing it.

Absolutely no knowledge at all. :)
