Walmart....

How articulate you are! You kiss your momma with that mouth?:P;):S

EDITED TO AD: I'm amazed at how many people make fun of the "hicks" and "rednecks" go to Walmart, yet have such a limited vocabulary that they use the F word as a noun, adjective, verb, adverb, exclamation, etc. :D Makes me laugh.

I worked at the Wal-Mart Home office in Bentonville, Arkansas for three years. I left them about three weeks ago for another job.

What a ride it was. I can tell you that unless you have worked for them, you won't fully understand the phenomenon that is Wal-Mart. One of the best parts was watching the blithering hysteria of the rest of the world over what looked like to us, just us doing a really good job.

I'm glad I worked there, but I'm glad it's over.

Can't stand the place. But it is a necessary evil!

evil is evil, it is not necessary, any company that pays their people a low wage so they qualify for "public" assistance needs to be done away with

OK: I want you to tell me how much per hour Wal-Mart, or for that matter, any company in America should pay a 16 year old boy to mop their floors. Now's your chance to set the lawful wage for inexperienced 16 year old floor moppers.

Come on, now, how many dollars and cents per hour should your law require that 16 year old floor moppers with absolutely no other experience make??

When you are done with that, tell me in dollars and cents what a "living wage" is. And once you have established what that wage is can you honestly say that every person in America that is able to punch a time clock entitled to it? Is a living wage a God-given right? Is a "living wage" a God-given right to EVERYONE?

I'm not saying that Wal-Mart is without flaw. Reminder: I quit working for them. However, most of what I'm reading in this thread is more of the blithering hysteria I was talking about.

The majority of Walmart employees are people raising families and pay mortgages and bills. Both, my mother and sister, had worked at a Walmart and like others I have known have nothing nice to say about the place.

Everyone who works deserves to make a wage that affords them the comfort in knowing that they can afford food, utilities, clothing, a home, to raise their family, save for retirement, insurance, transportation, medical, emergency money, some fun money... this list can go on forever.
Screw the mega-billion dollar corporations that offer nothing but low wage and junk built in China. China = low quality. I am tired of buying items that don't last a full year. Sadly we have become a "throw away society" for "low prices". Your 6 month old DVD player stopped working? No problem, throw it in the garbage and buy a new one at Junkmart for less than $30.00. So many items are tossed due to low quality and low price. I would happily pay the price (and often do) for high quality if it means that I can get a lifetime of enjoyment from that item. Quality is hard to find these days.

Economics will tell you this is not possible. If you increase how much money the people in the lowest economic class make, you cause inflation, so, while those people may have more dollars, those dollars are worth less. Businesses either have to raise prices or higher fewer people. Costs could be cut elsewhere, but businesses already have the incentive to do that. Creating a burden is unlikely to help a business become more efficient. This skips past that difficultly of setting a living wage to begin with.

This also can lead to inflation because any cost a business incurs will be passed on in its prices. Those increased labor costs will get passed on again and again to the only entity that is unable to pass off costs, the consumer. We could theoretically determine a living wage at some snapshot in time and mandate that all workers be paid that wage. Even if there is no additional unemployment, that increased labor cost will result in increased prices across the board. This translates to an increased cost of living and makes the living wage insufficient once the costs pass through the system. Even if you could control the rate of employment, there is no way to set a living wage. It would increase the cost of living and make that living wage insufficient again.

So Wal-Mart is really doing us all a favor because by hiring as few people as they can get away with and paying the a pittance, those people will eventually not be able to afford housing, gas, and groceries. So businesses, in order to survive, will have to cut prices. It's just a matter of time before we're all living in houses that cost $1/sq ft, driving $5000 BMWs and paying $.05 for bread.

Hooray for Wal-Mart! :S

I didn't say that. I don't shop at Wal-Mart because they support and encorage sweatshop labor in China. In a capitalist economy like the US, the concept of a living wage (and even a minimum wage) just doesn't work. There are ways to take care of the poor in society. Increasing inflation is not one of them.

Helloooooo.... I'm still waiting to hear how much the "living wage" is for that teenage boy floor mopper on his first job. Come on folks, I need specifics.

Once again, I remind you that there are a few specific issues I have with Wal-Mart from having worked at their corporate office, I don't love them. However, everything I've heard here is just pure sanctimony.

Haven't you heard? A guy gets married, has 3 kids and after years of lust and collecting welfare, then gets a job at Walmart mopping floors. Walmart then has an obligation to provide him with enough money to support his family, medical insurance, and retirement benefits. If they don't do all this, they are nothing but a bunch of Anti-American racists who don't give a shite about the little guy.

That's one of the problems with the "living wage" idea. How do we decide who deserves a "living wage"?

Thasnk you for your insight. That's the problem: If you think Wal-Mart is corrupt wait until you have an individual or a group of people deciding what everyone deserves.

That was mostly posted with a hint of anger, hence the wording.

People complain about the dumbest stuff. I just cant see why people see nothing but the negative in something's success, often times out of jealousy.

There are two sides to every coin. Maybe most of us just don't think about that.

But don't listen to me. I'm crazy enough to think that the Dahmer story was more tragic due to the failures of the people around him.

NOTE: I do not kiss my mother, or anyone for that matter. ;)

EDIT: I never professed to be able to express myself effectively. It is actually one of my big problems. Intelligent, but unintelligible.
