Kennedy 0 #1 May 8, 2006 QuoteIndustry expert George G. Krivosta, with the Suffolk County, N.Y., Crime Laboratory, has had a peer-reviewed article on micro-stamping, the process that theoretically would imprint the make, model and firearm serial number on a spent cartridge casing, published in the journal of the Association of Firearm and Tool Mark Examiners. The article in the AFTE Journal discusses the fallibility of the sole-source system upon which possible legislation in California is based. "While the proposed concept seems too simple to fail," Krivosta wrote about the manufacturer’s simplistic explanation, "the experience of this examiner suggested further examination and testing would be necessary before the firearms industry embraces the proposed solution." The article addressed three key questions on the reliability of the proposed system, and the author wrote, “Presentations previously made addressing these questions seemed quite promising. The review of test-fired specimens from an unfinished research project by a member of the Rhode Island State Crime Laboratory seemed quite the opposite.” Legislation under consideration in the California state legislature was withdrawn last year, but may be considered again this year. So who still wants to argue? Can you do so with something as strong as a peer-reviewed journal article? (hearsay from "this cop lab guy I know" does not qualify)witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*
JohnRich 4 #2 May 9, 2006 Whether it actually works is not important to the anti-gun politicians. What counts to them is that they can ban guns which don't do it. And of course, in order to trace a casing back to a gun owner, there has to be gun registration!
Zipp0 1 #3 May 10, 2006 How does stamping a casing solve anything? Are they assuming killers will just leave their spent casing lying around? Hell, just use a revolver. warpedskydiver 0 #4 May 10, 2006 The antigunners do not care whether anything helps at all, due to the nature of their argument. If gun crime was stopped entirely then there would be no reason for them to ban guns, and that would defeat their actual purpose, which is outlawing all guns. If you don't believe that check out the UN's plan to stop small arms proliferation and which of our politicians are onboard with UN style gun control. for those of you who won't bother I will sum it all up. The UN wants and PLANS to remove all guns from all private ownership worldwide that way only the right kind of people will have guns, Dictators,The UN, Large Corporations, gangs, etc. if you want the UN to handle things such as this thats cool, and maybe you would like a preview... Try a nice relaxing trip to the Sudan, particularly the Darfur region. The UN is in complete control on that one

And while using a revolver, throw someone else's stamped cases on the ground, which you picked up as discards at the local shooting range. That'll throw them off the scent... It's a stupid law, that will cause enormous expense and hassle, and won't solve any crimes. The money for the tracking database could be better spent on real police work.
