lawrocket 3 #1 May 6, 2006 A Democrat in the California Assembly has just been punished for abstaining from voting on a huge bond measure that easily won passage. http://www.recordnet.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060506/NEWS01/605060332/1001 "Assemblyman Juan Arambula had said he wouldn't vote for a $37 BILLION bond that didn't include money to build a new dam along the San Joaquin River. And he didn't." His punishment? Democratic Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez took away his chairmanship of the Jobs, Economic Development and Economy Committee. "Nûñez spokesman Steve Maviglio said Arambula's abstention was the last in a line of irksome moves from Arambula, who is considered a methodical moderate. 'The speaker wants leaders on his leadership team, and he took the ball and ran to the sidelines,' Maviglio said. 'Sometimes you have to put the whole state above a special interest in his district.'" Something that was not mentioned in this article was another punishment. They kicked Arambula from his office. HE was told yesterday to pack his office because he's being moved to smaller quarters. A little more on the story? A bunch of Valley Democrats had pledged earlier to vote against the measures (there were four of them), but gave in. Arambula - who didn't vote against them but merely abstained - was the only one who held his word. This was all part of a proposal by Schwarzenegger and amounted to only about half of what he proposed. Plenty of Republicans opposed it, but ended up voting with it after the Dems agreed to forego some spending. Still, there were plenty in the valley who voted against it. Arambula is generally considered to be pretty moderate. He said that he doesn't regret it. I applaud guys like this. I also had hoped that draconian domination by political leadership such as seen here was a thing of the past with term limits. My wife is hotter than your wife. Gawain 0 #3 May 7, 2006 Dude, more than 60% of the CA legislature is held by the Democrats. They've been running rough-shot over the state for over 10 years. It is they who are responsible for the financial woes of California. They also draw their own district lines too.So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light! I think you all need to study the meaning of the phrase "party whip". Oh yes, the Republicans have whips too.

lawrocket 3 #7 May 7, 2006 The gov came in with a plan for change. As I have been saying all along about a president, a Governor is the "chief executive" of the state. Put simply, he enforces laws. He can't do shit unless the legislature lets him. Obviously, there is a bully pulpit. Also obviously, the governor - like the president - has the power to forward proposals to the legislature for passage. Still, when the legislature says, "Go Fuck Yourself," the governor, as the executive of the legislaive will, has no other choice but to go fuck himself. The governor has now moved towards the Dems in the legislature. He got his ass handed to him by the legislators. Welcome to the world, governor. My wife is hotter than your wife.
