Moveon.org petition to help Internet freedom

If you get a chance to sign it, please do - the nut of it is that the larger internet providers want to have a say over what you can and cannot view on the internet, if you are subscribed through them. It would allow them to charge money for more exposure - effectively making the internet an advertising tool for revenue, instead of a free search and information tool

I vote for voting against that (did you follow that?)

Do you buy books online, use Google, or download to an iPod? Everything we do online will be hurt if Congress passes a radical law in upcoming days that gives giant corporations more control over what we do and see on the Internet.

Internet providers like AT&T are lobbying Congress hard to gut Internet freedom. They would allow AT&T to choose which websites open most easily for you based on which site pays AT&T more. If this law passes, almost every popular site—from Google to eBay to iTunes—must either pay protection money to companies like AT&T or risk having their websites process slowly. That why over 400,000 people have signed a petition opposing Congress' effort to gut Internet freedom.

use the link at the top and sign the petition, thanks

OMG... do you think the Ultra Righties here will actually sign ANYTHING that is on move on???:S

OMG... do you think the Ultra Lefties will even read anything on moveon before signing it immediately?

Good point, though, with moveon's stigma, maybe a good idea like this should be posted somewhere neutral where any bias (for or against) the site itself doesn't play into it.

Apparently there isn't even a Bill yet proposing to do any such thing. If there was, the link or it's related pages would have mentioned it, but it doesn't. So this just seems like getting people all worked-up over nothing at this point.

When someone comes out with an actual Bill, that is the time to flood Congress with comments. And then, cookie-cutter internet notes don't mean much to Congressmen.

But I hope it make everyone feel better.

If there isn't a bill, then is it possible that moveon is trying to create an issue from nothing? Do you think they are purposefully trying to deceive the public into thinking that someone actually proposed this? (More likely they are being proactive in regards to what China did recently, but I bet they will try to also make partisan political hay with it).

True statement - John Doe (D) senator from Wyoming did NOT vote against a bill to legalize child labor camps. He's an evil, evil person for this. Any decent leader would vote against it.

Context - because a bill like that never came up for a vote in the first place.

Of course, Congress NEVER issues extreme bills just so all the members can vote against it in order to tell their constituents what a good job they're doing....

:S:S:S

JR - I'd sign it, anyway (after reading it for sneaky stuff). It'll make me feel better.

the issue of net neutrality has certainly been in the forefront this quarter, John. Prior bills have debated it, and watered it down. It is a real concern. A pay for access web would favor the established and large at the cost of the new and small, putting at risk the areas where we would expect growth and a technology edge on the world.

And not one I want Moveon to have anything to do with, esp in an election year.

There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)

it's tough, I have both of the play books in front of me and can't decide which kool aid to drink - if I mix the red and blue together, the sugar just settles out and goes to the bottom of the pitcher in a nasty mess.

but the fact of the matter is that the Energy and Commerce Committee ARE tlaking about the issue -

they have a website, search House Energy and COmmecre Committee, then search there for Net Neutrality. Lots of discussion - some of it AGAINST making any rules for it.

Would you rather that USPA wait for a bill that restricts skydiving to be in front of Congress before they act on it?

Everyone please stop beating up n Move-On, they did not create the issue, they are simply pointing it out.

It is a good petition.
