TheAnvil 0 #1 May 5, 2006 Clicky Pat Buchanan has said a lot of wacky stuff sometimes, but this is a very good article. Read about Morales quite a bit in THE ECONOMIST over the past several months. Thoughts, anyone? Vinny the Anvil Post Traumatic Didn't Make The Lakers Syndrome is REAL JACKASS POWER!!!!!!
Andrewwhyte 1 #2 May 5, 2006 That's the problem with forcing democracy on people; sometimes the ungrateful bastards don't vote the way you tell them to. When you look at the wreckage caused by diamond wealth in Africa you can see a parallel with oil in the relatively more complex economies in Latin America. As the price of oil skyrockets people in areas that have oil want to make sure that they get their piece of the pie. These same factors have caused severe regional tensions within Canada in the past, and are beginning to rise again. When you realize that the oil companies have conducted business in Latin America in the manor befitting the country they are in, i.e. bribing the decision makers heavily and then extracting huge profits with limited benefit for the country as a whole, you can see some justification for the people not really being concerned about being fair to the foreign corps. The situation is no different in Saudi Arabia where the Western friendly government is only in power due to its support from the US. The same was true of the Shaw of Iran prior to 1979. I think a contributing factor in the voting patterns of the Latin Americans is the unpopularity of GWB and by extension the US, and by extension capitalism in general. Trent 0 #3 May 5, 2006 Excellent article, but nothing new. The rising tide of ignorance...erm... communism in Latin America has been a problem for years. The problem with democracy is that sometimes... people get the leaders they deserve. I guess since people didn't learn how communism destroys itself from the USSR's experience... they've decided they can do it right. The world will just have to wait a few years before they destroy themselves and have to start again at zero. However, we might not have that luxury if things keep going the way they are... these guys are all selling out to China as part of their bid to "nationalize" things. It's just a new name for the same face of corruption in Latin America... let's just hope that the people will do something about it.Oh, hello again! SpeedRacer 1 #5 May 15, 2006 Here's another one by Buchanan Pat Buchanan represents the old-school Republican idea of a foreign policy of non-intervention. Since WWII, neither the Democrats nor the Republicans have really adhered to this idea. This is one of the main reasons I'm switching to Libertarian.
