cumplidor 0 #1 May 4, 2006 Hey folks, I know this "soda pop is bad for you" debate seems trivial compared to the extreme dangers we face in our beloved sport, but try this: Go to the convience store/local restaurant and get as many packs of nutrasweet/equal as you can (but you only need 6-10 for this experiment) and go find a spray water bottle and a nice sized ant hill. Take a stick and lightly stir up the ant hill to get them going, then sprinkle the Nutrasweet over the ants, and spray lightly with the water bottle. Check the hill in 2-3 days and compare its growth to others you have not treated. Post your results! I have done this many times and the results are quite, quite scary... SpeedRacer 1 #3 May 4, 2006 what happens? I should point out here that the whole point of Nutrasweet is to be almost totally NON-nutritious. edited to add: and why is this in Speakers Corner?? Are the ants Conservatives or Liberals? Speed Racer --------------------------------------------------

SpeedRacer 1 #5 May 4, 2006 You're probably right. Liberal ants would just scrape up the Nutrasweet & put it in their little miniature lattes. Speed Racer --------------------------------------------------
cumplidor 0 #6 May 4, 2006 The ant hill dies. The size of the hill vs the number of packets you put on is proportional to the amount of death in the anthill. (more nutrasweet = more death)
tigra 0 #7 May 4, 2006 Its not exactly news that nutrasweet in large quantities is bad for you. And 6-10 packets is an extremely large quantity when you are talking about ants.

You know, you could be arrested and put on trial for this admission? -
SpeedRacer 1 #9 May 4, 2006 Thanks for reminding me. I've got a bunch of ants coming into my kitchen from underneath the back door. I need to get some anti poison. Fucking illegal alien ants, sneaking across the border of my back door, thinking they can freeload off the food that I paid for!! If I start poisoning them, do you think the survivors will start marching around in protest with tiny signs & flags? (I'll give 'em a flag! BLACK FLAG!! ) Speed Racer --------------------------------------------------

They are only trying to feed their families. -

('Course, the same holds true for black coffee, water, and tea - but those aren't generally considered bad for you.)
speedy 0 #13 May 4, 2006 Does this work for wasps as well? I suspect they are trying to build a nest right next to my kitchen. If it does, I'm buy some nutrasweet today Dave Fallschirmsport Marl

Does that mean that 3-4 diet cokes per day are bad for you too? If the amount of aspartame they are ingesting is the cause of death to the ants, then why in the heck would we be okay with it being in 4000+ products and taking it daily? Could this be related to the amount of cancers since the 80s? If aresenic were once an artifical sweetner, (before being discovered to be poision) would that make a difference in your opinion? SpeedRacer 1 #16 May 4, 2006 There's a lot of bullshit floating around about aspartame. The stuff about how deadly it is has been pretty well de-bunked, but it doesn't seem to quell the hysteria. Personally, I don't use the stuff. But I highly doubt it would kill ants, unless they were given no other food source. cumplidor 0 #20 May 4, 2006 I seriously doubt I would die from drinking too much water. unless you meant drowning... And eating too much refined sugar will kill you too. But this goes back to my earlier post that this stuff causes cancer and the very strange circumstances surrounding its sudden FDA approval back in 1981 after years of denying it. I certainly have no problem with folks wanting to poision themselves by whatever means necessary. The fact is alot of folks think that Aspartame is safe (in whatever dosage), and the FDA doesn't seem very interested in looking at the overwhelming data that proves Aspartame is not safe. (non-industry produced data - without corporate influence on the results)
SpeedRacer 1 #21 May 4, 2006 actually the overwhelming data (non-corporate) proves that aspartame IS safe. Speed Racer --------------------------------------------------
cumplidor 0 #22 May 4, 2006 Got a link to that data? I have links, but everyone seems to discount them. Seems if they don't agree with the FDA version, it is then classified as BS information. So basically, until the FDA says "Hmm. This might cause cancer" then it is not possible?
lawrocket 3 #23 May 4, 2006 I guess your study disproves the thought that aspartame causes cancer. It looks like it kills living things well before cancer can develop. Ban it. My wife is hotter than your wife.

billvon 3,132 #25 May 4, 2006 >I seriously doubt I would die from drinking too much water. It's called hyponatremia. You sometimes see deaths from people drinking a lot of water as a fraternity hazing thing, or from trying to beat a drug test. >And eating too much refined sugar will kill you too. Exactly. Lots of things will kill you if you eat too much of it. Heck, lots of refined sugar (sucrose) can cause diabetes and heart disease, as well as obesity that leads to a lot of other diseases. >But this goes back to my earlier post that this stuff causes cancer > and the very strange circumstances surrounding its sudden FDA > approval back in 1981 after years of denying it. Agreed; it is also dangerous in large quantities. Used as a substitute for sugar, the good outweighs the bad for many people. (i.e. the cancer risk from aspartame/splenda is less than the risk for heart attack from the sort of obesity that comes from using sucrose.) >The fact is alot of folks think that Aspartame is safe (in whatever >dosage), and the FDA doesn't seem very interested in looking at >the overwhelming data that proves Aspartame is not safe. When you use terms like that, there is never any agreement. Aspartame is not safe; neither is water. The FDA knows it is not 100% safe, but has determined it is safe _enough_ to allow the public to decide on their own if they want to use it or not. (Which is why any product containing it is so marked.)
