1 billion cars

Recommended Posts

That is what there is expected to be by the year 2020, possibly sooner. That is approximately 1 car for every 6 humans.
The article I read viewed the problem from many angles. Fuel, roads, vehicle type. One can only wonder why traffic seems to only be getting worse. As a society we are just going to have to change drastically in some form in order to solve the transportation problem. Maybe it means you have a city car and a travel car. Something is going to have to give somewhere.
There are just to many angles to attack such a problem from and from the sounds of the article they are attempting to look at all the options. They being the auto makers, and actually just some people who see a solution to a problem.

We need to all become clowns. Then we can fit a lot more people in a car.

:D:D

I think his point was outrage that 5 of every 6 people won't have an SUV. The automakers are completely slacking in opening up the market and getting more cars out there so everyone can drive.

and they don't evolve to run on blood.

It's been feeling like they do lately. I don't recall who said it, but they should give away a free Metro with every large truck now.

That is actually what I was talking about sort of. People might need to drive two smaller vehicles instead of one big one. However that might double the amount of cars. Not so fast. Your "commuter car" wouldn't exactly be a car but rather a max two person pod pretty much that ran on electric or some other clean fuel. You'd have your own highway lanes so you would not need to worry about being smushed by a big rig or SUV. Of course then there is the whole getting to the highway, using city streets, some higher up power will have to save you then.

I think that there's a car in Europe that's pretty popular - dinky thing made by Swatch and one of the big Euro car manufacturers. Sounds like our commuter. You just drive it straight into a parallel parking spot and it fits - wheels at the corners, etc.

I've always wondered when/if motorcycle manufacturers were going to come up with a bike designed for fuel efficiency.

If I can get 35mpg in my 2700lb car, surely they could make a 300lb bike that could get 80-100mpg right? :)

they could do, but who would want a yamaha R1 that only does 120mph flat out and 0 - 60 in 12 seconds :o

deisel motorcycles can do 240mpg. top speed = 50mph.

Drag is the problem that tops out bikes in the 60-70mpg range, if their function is to be used for freeway driving. It's a bit shameful how many bikes have drifted down into the 30s, even with the addition of fuel injection. At least they're still conserving parking space, I guess. And energy cost of manufacture remains much better.

BTW, outside of supersport, bikes tend to run closer to 500lbs.

My bike gets around 45mpg at cruising speeds of 70-90mphB|

it also eats way more gas when I twist the throttle to the stop:o

but what do you want for something that will do around 188mph or so?
