stallboy 0 #76 April 21, 2006 By definition, positively discriminating towards one group is negatively discriminating against another. If this is based on race then you are being racist. Discrimination is Discrimination, people should be judged on the ability, not their colour. Your heart may be in the right place, but the solution is not to "lower the bar", it is to give people equal opportunities in education. Look at it this way, if you had to have heart surgery would you prefer a doctor who has been hired to fill a quota, or would you want the one who was the best person for the job? Not the same thing? Am I being silly... I know, let's have a list of jobs where it is acceptable to hire based on quotas...One day, I'm gonna grow wings, a chemical reaction, hysterical and useless... Not the same thing? Am I being silly... I know, let's have a list of jobs where it is acceptable to hire based on quotas... I agree with that. But the point that I think a lot of people are missing is that what happens far, far, far too often is that it's the man who is the most socially compatible with the hiring group that gets the job, rather than the most qualified person. When the most qualified person is a minority, that person is often over-looked in favor of the white guy in the izod.... That being said, I still don't agree with affirmative action because I think it results in the very same problem.... I think there is probably some middle ground in there that can result in more productive solutions. I do think that over time we're making progress. That's a good thing. linz-- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. A liberal is just a conservative who's been to jail
Amazon 7 #78 April 21, 2006 Well Said Lindsey.... That was the point I was tryign to make but seems to be skimming over some peoples heads. It seems like all the good ole boys seem to miss the point.... and continueally bring up the most qualified line...What criteria does best qualified mean. In many cases its who the hiring manager wants and is most comfortable with. All things being equal... If everyone is given the same educational opportunities... and if the qualifications are quantified with realistic criteria then finally we may get to a popint where no more AA is ever needed. Anyone who truely believes that point has been reached in MOST of this country... has not walked in the shoes or skin of those who are denied access to housing and jobs because of their race or because of their gender. stallboy 0 #79 April 21, 2006 If you want to fix the problem then cure the disease, not the mask its symptoms. Campaign for educational reforms, for better understanding and to make racism socially unacceptable. The point is that the country is heading in the right direction and that has not been achieved through positive discrimination, but through individuals and groups that believe people are equal and should be taken on their own merit. I believe that I understand your point, that their are still people who discriminate on the basis of race, but why join them? Positive and negative discrimination are two sides of the same coin. One day, I'm gonna grow wings, a chemical reaction, hysterical and useless...
