Watch List Delays Reservist's Homecoming
By Associated Press
Wed Apr 12, 8:08 PM

MINNEAPOLIS - A Marine reservist returning home after eight months in Iraq was told he couldn't board a plane to Minneapolis because his name appeared on a watch list as a possible terrorist.

Staff Sgt. Daniel Brown, who was in uniform and returning from the war Tuesday with 26 other Marine military police reservists, was delayed briefly in Los Angeles until the issue was cleared up.

The other reservists arrived at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport as scheduled, but instead of immediately meeting their families, they waited on a bus for Brown.

"We don't leave anybody behind," 1st Sgt. Drew Benson said. "We start together, and we finish together."

Brown, 32, arrived more than an hour later. He had also had airport trouble when he was trying to go to Iraq _ and he missed his plane then as well.

"A guy goes over and serves his country fighting for eight or nine months, and then we come home and put up with this?" he asked.

Nico Melendez, a spokesman for the Transportation Security Administration, said Wednesday he could not confirm or deny whether someone was on a watch list. He said Brown's case should have been fairly easy for the airline to clear up in Los Angeles.

"It should have taken 10 minutes," he said. "We do regret that an American hero was inconvenienced."

It was kind of cool that his mates wait for him... but maybe they should have stayed a lot closer... a group of uniformed lad looking croos would have put the fera of god into the rent-a-cop dipsticks.

You missed my point.... they waited in the bus NOT with their mate.

That could have caused more problems. Try having 26 others wait behind and then find seats for them all? You'd end up dividing everyone up into several flights over possibly the next couple of days.

That Fiest Sergeant did it right from a command and control standpoint, and did it right from a moral standpoint.

heheh:D

ok then heres another alternative...

The TSA tries to do this and the response could politely be NO we won't leave him with you and no you can't stop us here and now unless you are willing to arrest the entire unit.

Even if they do place all of them under arrest what will come of it?...probably nothing.

What do you think happened with the TSA screener who detained the Marine like a common criminal?

I bet absolutley nothing happened but a pat on the back.

How many people slipped by while they were busy with this guy?

here's an interesting thought:

the guys name is DANIEL BROWN.

not exactly a one-of-a-kind, ya know? i don't really know whether it's a SSN that nabs him, his DL #, or whatever. But damn, the articles about this stuff always indicate it's a "name on a watch/nofly list"

the name DANIEL BROWN.

why don't you just put "John Smith" on there...

:D

Now that sounds like more of the Marines I know. The type I respect and admire and appreciate. And that IS likely the response that actually happened. (and then the first sarg did the right thing and kept the guys in control anyway and split them off on their way to wait for their buddy without causing a bigger issue).

Marines are cool.

Or does that only apply to people with guns?

why would I want to intimidate people if they have guns? that's just bad judgement

edit: Mental bubble from your post - 20 or Marines with automatic weapons marching through the airport in step humming battle tunes. blood shot eyes, just looking for an excuse to get in a fight. Don't know many Marines do ya, Narci? I reality, I doubt the Marines get to carry their guns through a commercial terminal. They are just people too, only people with a strong loyalty to each other. In this case, worst case, there'd be a lot of bluster, but no intimidation or confrontation given (maybe taken, but only if the TSA was a crybaby and took their attitudes incorrectly). Then the sarg would tell them to settle down - and they would, immediately. Best case, you'd see a lot of respectful young marines just backing each other up. A lot like a group of teenagers would, only with better haircuts.

So are you guys saying that the right thing to do if the TSA stops you is to intimidate them?

No, the right thing to do is to sit down immediately and cry.

then hire a lawyer and complain how your 'civil' rights were violated and bash whichever administration is in power (c'mon - everybody's doing it).

Then bitch that they only did it because they are prejudice to all people and aren't sensitive to the incredible diversity that is "ME".

Finally, after another good cry. Hash it all out with our government paid therapist.

Plant a tree.

That's phrased in an interesting way. But it does highlight the purpose of government, EVERYBODY is out to get rights that they have which nobody else has. It's never about equality, it's about one group using government to try and get some kind of ascendancy over other groups. Government is never really about equal treatment of all.

I thought we were talking about the TSA and why you imply that Marines (except your husband of course) are all intimidating thugs......

I never implied anything of the sort. Thanks for inventing words for me to have said however. I always appreciate that.

What I implied was that all this blustering that the marines SHOULD have turned into intimidating thugs is ridiculous.

This thread is full of right-wingers saying the marines had every right to interfere when a government security agent believed there was cause to
double check that one of them wasn't a threat.

I thought you guys were the ones who keep saying "We're at war" but here you are egging one part of your own team to sabotage the work of another part of your own team.

Even YOU guys don't take this war seriously.

The gay bit was (hopefully) a self-limiting digression from the thread, not a hijack, but if you want to continue this thought maybe it's worth a new thread.

If you do want to continue talking about this, please start off by explaining why you think I hold the odd position you seem to be attributing to me.
