JohnRich 4 #1 April 10, 2006 Census report: "States Ranked by Total Taxes Per Capita Amount, 2005" (See the second column) http://www.census.gov/govs/statetax/05staxrank.html Woohoo! Texas is 49th lowest out of 50! Wyoming in 3rd place really surprises me. Why are taxes so high there?
SpeedRacer 1 #2 April 10, 2006 I'm not sure I understand. Does this list the amount of money the Federal government gets from these states from Federal taxes? Or is it state taxes? Or is it total taxes (federal and state)? Speed Racer --------------------------------------------------
craddock 0 #3 April 10, 2006 Wisconsin I typically close to the top 5 in Tax burdens by state. Illinios is between 28-37 depending on which survey I have seen.(I have lived the majority of my life in Illinois and Wisconsin.) This graph does not represent which State you pay the most taxes in well at all. That spot isn't bad at all, the winds were strong and that was the issue! It was just on the downwind side. PhreeZone 20 #4 April 10, 2006 Wyoming is high since they have large infastructre costs and a small population to spread those costs over. With less industrial base and a large population of seasonal residents (come to visit their mountian cabiin) the money needs to come from those still around. Simple economics for it.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com

It appears that it's just state taxes. Blues, Dave"I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew)
craddock 0 #6 April 10, 2006 Quotet appears that it's just state taxes. Total state taxes paid/ population right? It sure does not show which state an individual pay's the most taxes in. Back to my comments about WI and IL. Illinois has a flat 3% state sales tax. I don't think that WI lowest bracket is that low. It would cost me much more in sales tax to move across the border. That spot isn't bad at all, the winds were strong and that was the issue! It was just on the downwind side.
livendive 8 #7 April 10, 2006 I looked around on the census site and found median income data for each state as well, then made a quick spreadsheet ranking the states by the percentage of income going to state taxes. Texas still came in 48th...not too shabby! Edit to add: Oops, I wasn't thinking clearly. The attachment has a median-mean problem. Oh well, I'll leave it there anyhow. lummy 4 #8 April 10, 2006 I was under the impression Alaska did not have a state income tax, yet it is listed as 5th or 6th highest. justinb138 0 #9 April 10, 2006 Texas doesn't have a state income tax. We just have an 8.75% sales tax, property tax, and basically every other type of tax you can think of.
larsrulz 0 #10 April 11, 2006 This list is total taxes paid, not total income taxes. In the case of say Alaska(really a great state...no income tax or general state sales tax), they get half their tax from severance tax, i.e. tax on oil. Whereas Texas (also no income tax), gets 80% from sales tax and 5% from oil...hmm...who is more oil friendly! I'm just glad I'm not paying some crazy California 10% tax rate...and I thought IL's 3% was high when I lived there! I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF
