quade 4 #29 April 7, 2006 QuoteThe president of the US has the authority to declassify and release anything he chooses. So, while this may or may not be what it seems right now he more than liley broke no law. (if it is what it is being reported (and I doublt this is the whole story) it sure smells bad) Woke up this morning, could not believe what I had heard. Oh I woke up this morning and could not believe what I had heard. It has to be frustrating to want so bad for Bush to be evil. but, it really depends on what the meaning of "leak" is now doesn't it?? As I learn more I am seeing that this is one more "non-story". But, is it not a crime to reveal the name of an undercover CIA operative? Yes, only if the agent was undercover at the time, or three year prior to the release, which she wasn't. Now the investigotors say that none of the Bush admin will be called to testify (including Rove) and is no longer looking at Plames name being released. Why? billvon 3,132 #33 April 7, 2006 >It has to be frustrating to want so bad for Bush to be evil. Oh, I don't think it's hard for people to decide that on their own based on his actions. It just takes some people longer than others. > but, it really depends on what the meaning of "leak" is now doesn't it?? Indeed! If you re-define it to mean "release of unofficially released information to the press by a lying democrat" then it's clear that what Bush did is not a leak. Well, the GOP redefined what "lie" means - why not "leak" too?
stoneycase 0 #34 April 7, 2006 non-story... that's right, i suppose...if you think that declassifying intelligence with the sole intent of countering your critics is the same as declassifying intelligence to someone with an actual "need-to-know" i'm waiting patiently for more details, i think libby's going to sing a bit more before this over. and with rove still under investigation, seems like this pot is going to be boiling for awhile. but really, it's frustrating as hell, to me at least, to sit here and listen to this administration say the Pres can declassify anything he wants - and this includes declassifying pre-war intel *secretively* to a select few reporterts with the distinct purpose of attacking reports made by his critics. that, to me, is f***ed and a completely bogus use of executive power to "catapult propaganda". why do you think Libby initial said "no" to the meetings with the reporters - he knew disclosing that NIE to them was questionable at best. when the VP came back and said "go fwd" with the blessing of the P - Libby *still* questioned the action and requested the assistance of legal counsel. Libby was looking to dot his I's and cross his T's because he knew he was being forced to climb out on a limb. he was being told to pass on what-was-then classified intel *secretively* to a select few reporter allies. i'm sorry, but to me, that seems like more than a "non-story" ymmvDoes whisky count as beer? - Homer There's no justice like angry mob justice. - Skinner Be careful. rushmc 23 #38 April 7, 2006 Take a breath dude. Any president has the legal power to declassify anything. If a president OK's release of information then it has been , by definition, declassified and it is therefore not illegal to release it. If you go back and look at what he said after the Plame crap, put it into context with this, what he said makes sense you know, if most of you that hate Bush so bad would take a look at issues in context, instead of the context of "now we can get him" you wouldn't get upset as often. By the way, there are some things in this story (as of right now) I do not like. If he broke a law then I will line up on the side to get him out. I do not think that is what has happened here however......"America will never be destroyed from the outside, if we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves."
