Eiley 0 #1 March 22, 2006 Australia recently started a new tourism campaign with the catchphrase "So, where the bloody hell are you?" http://www.wherethebloodyhellareyou.com/ The Brits banned the ad because they found the word 'bloody' offensive (although they've since repealed the ban). http://seven.com.au/news/nationalnews/153941 Now the Canadians are telling us they find the word 'hell' offensive. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/LAC.20060321.RBLOODY21/TPStory/Business I remember having an American girlfriend over here who couldn't believe a TV ad for a bra had the tagline "Great tits". It was an ad for a bra. You buy a bra (in part) to make your tits look great. Are we (Australians) really so much 'less prudish' than the rest of the world? Is the tagline "So where the bloody hell are you?" offensive? (Leaving aside some of the obvious answers potential tourists might give to that question... "We're buried in Belanglo..." "Strung up in the outback...." "You left us to die in the ocean..." "Burned alive at your backpackers..." "Eaten by your crocodiles...." "Trying to avoid the 9 most deadly snakes in the world..." Damn. I'd probably have second thoughts about visiting here too... ) nothing to see here

Some of us 'nucks sure the HELL aren't offend by the word HELL, as some of us think it's a HELL of a way to live your life ... worrying about being HELL bent on being politically correct all of the time. Why don't you just go to ... ####. Oh and by the way, I'm currently working in HELL since my office is (no shit) located at 666 Burrard Street in downtown Vancouver. BAAAAD WAR GOOD Much as I'd like to, I don't think we can lay the blame for this one there... ...our Prime Minister's tongue is firmly embedded in your President's back passage, and Australia is part of the "Coalition of the Willing". But at least we get to say naughty words on TV. (We have full frontal nudity and even the C-word on free-to-air TV after 9.30pm too...) nothing to see here

bob.dino 1 #7 March 22, 2006 Australians are, in many ways, more conservative than most. However, use of offensive language isn't one of them. Aussies are completely relaxed about their kids hearing cursing. Radio stations here happily run polls called "hit or shit" during hours that kids will be listening. You couldn't do that in the UK before 9pm, and probably not at all in Ireland. UK TV has a pretty rigidly-enforced 'watershed' at 9pm. Pre-watershed, kids are assumed to be watching, and content is restricted. Post-9pm, pretty much anything goes. As an aside, the word cunt is massively offensive to US folk, pretty common in the UK, and not much more offensive than fuck in Ireland. The fact that it's used in colloquial speech doesn't mean it's allowed on broadcast media. Aren't cultural differences wonderful?

I guess the replacement would be 'fuck' as in "Where the Fuck are You?" But it would be just as accurate to say "Where in goodness' name are you?" Or "Where on earth are you?". nothing to see here
rhys 0 #12 March 22, 2006 QuoteAs an aside, the word cunt is massively offensive to US folk, pretty common in the UK, and not much more offensive than fuck in Ireland. we (N.Z.) often use the word cunt in a positive manner e.g. " man that guys a good cunt" means "that guys a really good person" I don't know where it came from but we use it all the time. the word bugger was a part of a toyota campaign and bought cheer to all. Bloody Is used in govornment anti drinking campaigns "if you drink and drive, you're a bloody idiot" IMO a word only becomes offensive if you are offended by it."When the power of love overcomes the love of power, then the world will see peace." - 'Jimi' Hendrix

Former would be fine, latter would not. it depends on the context really, if it is used in "he's a bloody idiot" it can loosly equate to 'fucking', but if used in "the price is bloody outrageous!" then you could translate it to the word 'very' Either way you Pom and Canuck blokes are missing out, the ad campaign is worth it just for the girl in the bikini...sigh
