Because those devout Christians you mentioned are awful sinning people just like everyone else and because Jesus instructed us to. Born again Christians don't go to heaven when they die because they're good people. They go to heaven because they’re bad people who have been forgiven. All the good deeds they do from that point on are only because Jesus lives in their hearts. That does not mean that they don't still fall into sin like everyone else. They just don't wallow in it, they feel bad about it, and try to continually change. It comes with the regenerative spirit. It's the difference between going with the flow of the river and swimming against the current. Becoming a Christian does not necessarily make your life easier.
