Neither party is for smaller government or fiscally responsible. THAT'S THE ENTIRE PROBLEM. We don't have a fiscally conservative party to choose candidates from. ... SpeedRacer 1 #3 March 9, 2006 starting optional wars is NOT the path to a small government. Of course that would mean many Democrats who favored the invasion of Iraq, are also not the party of Small Government. I'm not of the belief that the Dems or the Reps are angels or devils. They each want a bloated, all-powerful government, just according to slightly differing agendas. It just serves them as politicians. billvon 3,120 #6 March 9, 2006 > Are the Republicans the party for smaller government? They used to be, and that is still their stated philosophy - but they have in fact become the party of larger government. I notice that many republicans do not like this, and either protest that that's not 'really what the party is all about' or start to tend towards libertarianism or other alternatives. A few things could happen from here: 1. The party could fragment, with a significant part of the party going to a third party like the Libertarians. This would result in democratic control of the government in the short term, which is the 'bogeyman' the GOP can use to keep this from happening. 2. The party could become fiscally conservative again. This can't really happen with Bush as honorary head of the GOP. But as soon as he's out, we may see a swing back to conservatism. 3. Democrats could claim the ground that the GOP has vacated, and become the fiscally conservative party. Such reversals have happened before. 4. Nothing will change, and we will have two large-government parties running things. The GOP will lose some members, and may lose control of the house/senate - but in either case a large-government party will be running things. Unfortunately I suspect 4) will come to pass.
