Kimblair13 0 #1 March 7, 2006 So I'm trying write a paper in regards to this: How was the societal division over the passage of the Equal Rights Amendment similar to the split in opinion regarding the Supreme Court case Roe v. Wade? How did the rhetoric that was used in arguments supporting and opposing the ERA mirror that which surrounded Roe v. Wade? Were there differences in the way society was split over these two significant issues? Anyone got any strong opinions to get me started writing? I've been sitting in my room all day and have accomplished nothing.

lawrocket 3 #8 March 7, 2006 Perhaps you'll get better responses if you posit a thesis to us, and see what we think. Of course, so long as it wouldn't be considered unauthorized collaboration by your institution. My wife is hotter than your wife.
kelpdiver 2 #9 March 7, 2006 how old are you? I know the ERA lost before my time (I'm 34), whereas the abortion debate has continued. So I have no frame of reference to compare the two. And of course now the '27th amendment' is something quite different.

wmw999 2,589 #16 March 7, 2006 I was around for both; avoided pink for years because it was "taken" by the anti-ERA folks. But really, there's a lot more invective and nasty polarization now than there was then. Most of the anti-ERA stuff I heard was about women needing protection. That may have been because it was what I wanted to hear. I do know that my (way more than me) extremely liberal college professor uncle was against it because equal rights should have all been covered already. Of course, my almost as liberal father really kind of thought that a mother should stay home with the children because she's better suited, and a man with a family should be paid more than a women for the same job. Nightingale 0 #17 March 7, 2006 Given the way you've described your assignment, the opinions of people of today don't seem as relevant to it as the opinions of people living at the time. If I were writing a paper on this topic, the first place I'd go would be to newspaper editorial pages from the time in question. You'll get a lot of fairly well constructed opinions on both sides of each issue, which should give you a starting point to compare and contrast them. Your school reference librarian should be able to help you out. Of course, there's always google and wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roe_v._Wade http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equal_Rights_Amendment That should give you a start.
