The wussification of America

Recommended Posts

Not sure if that is a word...wussification, but it is today.

Anyway, when the hell did it become ok to not correct people when they make a boo boo? Why is it in schools kids are being coddled and not forced to hold themselves to higher standards? Heaven forbid johnny gets his feelings hurt because he got a wrong answer. WTF is up with that?

If we are never corrected for mistakes we make we never learn. It is frosting me something fierce to see how society is turning everyone into a bunch of freaking wusses. Im sorry if you fuck up, you must learn from your mistakes.

Am I loosing it and becoming bitter in my old age? I mean come on I heard some schools dont have failing grades..."there are no losers here" Well guess what in the real world we are all losers! The more time that is spent trying to isolate and protect from the things that hurt us, the more we become bigger whining babies.

People are being trained to allow there own paranoia be forced on others, and then there are people who are allowed to live this way, people just coddle them.

Sorry had to vent...

Couldn't agree more.
Self esteem with out any skills or training sure as hell aren't going to help you one damn bit after graduation in the real world.
And I think a lot of kids these days know when you try to blow smoke up their ass and get really resentful about it.

That is it too..there are so many people who do this...and I cannot stand the fake bullshit. Drives me up a wall. Life is not all pretty pink flowers and candy. Never will be. Pretending it is will do nothing more then lead you into a deep hole when shit does hit the fan. Not saying everything is bad and wrong, but this whole teaching society to live with its head so far in the clouds you loose sense of reality thing blows.

Just amazes me...and annoys me to see this. We do not become stronger by not being out out into reality. We get stronger by putting ourselves in more difficult situations and learning to work thru them.

Side track.

Wussification yes. You can see it in our education system. Just consider what a HS diploma means nowadays. Vs what it meant 50-70 years ago.

Watch out, someone will come here and get on you about what the "real world" really is, then change the whole subject of the thread. Be careful with that one!

I agree here too... sports with no scores, tests with no failing grades, no red ink for corrections, we're setting our kids up to be a bunch of spineless retards. Way to go sensitive crowd! Your pansiness will do us in yet!

... next thing you know, people will try to blame society or something when they're on trial for murder... oh.... wait.... :S
Oh, hello again!

This is the thing, the less we teach our kids about competition the less of a competitive nation we are. Which then makes us far less useful in the grand scheme. It is already bad that we have crap for government at the moment, but our future doesn't look any brighter if we are going to have a bunch of kids now growing up not knowing how to compete, and win or loose. If we are always winners, then when we do loose no idea how to deal with the let down.

It is the recipe for destruction...and the road is being paved as we speak [:/]

Part of the thing I believe, is some parents don't know how to discipline their kids and they grow up being brats. :| If parents would step up and be the authority figures they are supposed to be, you wouldn't have as many kids not being able to handle the harsh realities of life.:|

I have to agree totally with this. It makes it even worse that at home parents cannot handle the children...then add the whole lets not hurt johnnys feelings at school...

It scares me.

OK question: You are a single mom and have 2 teenaged boys. The kids are skipping school to the point where they are ready to flunk their grade. You have exhausted every effort to make them go to school, but they just come back home after you leave for work or go and hang out with their friends at the bowling alley. What would be your next step? Would you call your county or state govt. and ask for intervention knowing you risk having them sent to a juvenile detention center, where they will surely come out worse than they were when they went in? What should a responsible parent do?

A lot of what people characterize as brattiness is just part of normal development for most children. It is just that the behavior of a normally developing child disturbs them, and so they call it brattiness.

Some of the best adults I know were hell on wheels as children, and some of the worst were held up as the epitome of "the perfect child" when they were young.

But you'll have kids one day, and then you'll know.

Edited to add: a bigger problem today is schools telling our kids that their parents are not authority figures.

Dang. Perhaps my lasting legacy on this website will be that I have added this phrase to the vernacular. In the words or Brad Hamilton, as spoken to Jeff Spicoli, "Learn it, love it, live it."

Do you always try and disagree with me?

And a lot of what people characterize as bratiness in NOT normal:S. I have seen parents who let their child rule over them, and their children become spoiled brats. If they don't get their own way everytime, they throw a tantrum and the parents ends up reinforcing this behavior by giving the child what he/she wants as to quiet the child.

I don't have to have my own children to understand the psychological development of children.:S

Bottom line is, many parents today lack being authoritative enough with their kids; many problems result from this.:S Today what many people in our society call "normal development" I might disagree with. I don't think kids should go through life without discipline.

And I am sorry, but if my kids start acting like THEY are the ones in charge, and should have their every whim catered to, to me they become brats. However, hopefully discipline and role modeling can help prevent this....

but then again what do I know:S:S
