Police Chiefs, on the Right to Own Guns

Recommended Posts

Quote

I would think the Chief of Police of a small town would have a much better idea of his town's views on RKBA than the Chief of a much larger town.

Especially as the Chiefs in larger towns seem to be much more of a political animal than a law officer.

If you want to know the general population's views, why not poll them directly instead of the police chiefs? It still makes no sense.

It does, in the sense that in many states the Police Chief has to sign off on the concealed carry license request.

They didn't want to know the general population's view. Other organizations already do that kind of poll. This particular organization represents police chiefs, so that's who they polled. Gosh, what's so evil about that? They didn't misrepresent the chief's views by claiming that it is representative of the rest of the population - they just stated exactly what it was.

Anti-gun folks like to claim that the majority of police chiefs are against civilian gun ownership. This poll proves them wrong. Many citizens take their cues on what they think should be done about crime from police chiefs. So this poll is instructive for them too. And police chiefs have influence on legislation, so this poll is instructive for that reason too.

Besides, you always claim that you support 2nd Amendment rights. So what are you so upset about?

I'm not upset. I simply point out the fatuousness of this "poll".

I have heard people say that because the chiefs (meaning at least two) of large cities take a purely political stance on the issue and represent the liberal constituents that gave and keep them in power, that "police chiefs" are against it. So, do liberals really care what police chiefs think? Or is it merely a catch phrase?

So then, in fact, you agree with the 92% of police chiefs that support private gun ownership, right?

Right. I absolutely support minimizing government intrusion into the lives of the people, including with respect to guns.

I disagree that guns save lives. The so-called "data" presented in support of that notion is highly dubious. But that's not inconsistent with my general opposition to government intrusion.

Here's the real test guys - Kallend has consistently been on your side. He just doesn't agree with the arguments normally used - he has his own. So are you happy he's in support, or does he have to walk lockstep with your reasons too?

I just like to point that position of his out, because on the one hand he says he supports gun ownership, but then virtually every single post he ever makes in any gun discussion is to argue against it. He never criticizes any of the anti-gun arguments, only the pro-gun arguments.

I just find that odd for someone who professes to care so much about the truth.

Apparently lockstep is required, independent thought is strongly discouraged.

There will be no good argument against civilian gun ownership until you can prove that criminals legally purchase guns to use in committing a crime. What % of gun related crimes occur w/ a weapon legally purchased by the criminal using that weapon in a crime? So nil it's nothing, that's how much. People against civilian gun ownership are people who don't know what they're talking about and are trying to solve a problem the most ineffective way possible.

T What % of gun related crimes occur w/ a weapon legally purchased by the criminal using that weapon in a crime?

what % of guns (legal or illegal) were at some point in their
existence legally manufactured and sold - about 99%?

Ah no - of course. Legal guns automatically self destruct and
evaporate if someone tried to steal or illegally sell them.
Illegal guns, on the other hand, they grow in dark holes in the
ground and people from evil land harevst them at night.

Please tell us what % of vehicles used in robberies and vehicular manslaughter events were legally manufactured and sold.

Wow...100%, you say?

That is a COMPLETELY unacceptable percentage - I'm going to write my congressman and have them make a law against selling autos!

Now wait, think about it. Modify all cars that explode upon being stolen...... yeah, I'm liking this a lot....

Did you know that nearly 99% of all hot dogs that caused choking deaths were legally manufactured and sold? The other one percent were actually stuffed by a gentleman name Ole Svenson of Dubuque, IA. His extra thick casings were difficult to chew. He's applying for a legal license to make and sell.

Hotdogs don't kill people, bad chewing kills people. But, just to be safe, we need to outlaw private ownership of hotdogs. Only specially trained policement and servicemen should have access to hotdogs, and then only to be used in the event of bear attacks or invasion by space aliens in order to protect the baby seals on our planet - mother Gaia.

No, but in all fairness, cars and other potentially dangerous things (like steak knives, baseball bats, nail guns, etc.) can be used to harm people, but that's not what they're designed to do.
Most (even if not all) handguns and military-style assault weapons were invented to shoot people with, and not targets or game. And most domestic violence shootings aren't committed with bolt-action deer rifles.

Steak knives could be considered to have 'evolved' from daggers. Baseball bats - clubs/maces. Etc....

How many prison murders are committed by handguns?

It's not the ITEM being used...it's the USER. That's the point I'm trying to make, and the point that the Brady adherents keep conveniently overlooking.
