ChasingBlueSky 0 #28 March 3, 2006 QuoteI don't disagree with you. Technology always gets better as time goes by. I think the point of the article is that if you are thinking about purchasing a Hybrid, these are some factors you need to consider in your decision. http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/cars/new-cars/high-cost-of-hybrid-vehicles-406/hybrids-vs-all-gas.htm?resultPageIndex=1&resultIndex=2&searchTerm=hybrids All cars are a money sink. Some more than others. It has been known for some time that the cost savings from a Hybrid may not be there for years, possibly 10 years. My reserach on autos is a bit old from a couple years ago. But even then I remember finding info claiming tweaks to cars, esp SUVs, that would increase their green factor but due to big corp BS that won't happen. Also, there are many that believe GW pushes the use of Hydrogen cell cars because it will keep the oil companies happy since we will still need them to produce that fuel source._________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... You're absolutely right. I just reread through everything and realize that I had clicked "Reply" to the wrong post. That was sheer clumsiness from doing it too quickly. Although I quoted the right comment (his) which you had also quoted, I replied to your post instead of his mistakenly. I apologize for causing this misunderstanding. Pretty amazing that kids from a poor urban area could not only accomplish this, but the way it has affected their outlook on life is truely the greater benefit. billvon 3,111 #47 March 3, 2006 >Bigotry is learned. Bigotry is pretty natural. It's exhibited in the natural world all the time; groups of animals tend to cluster together, and tend to exclude weaker/smaller/different looking animals, even of the same species. It's a survival trait, one that prevents defective genes from turning up in offspring. A lot of other 'bad' characteristics are also somewhat instinctual. Lust is an obvious one. Gluttony is often programmed; the animal that can eat a lot (and store the excess as fat) survives more often than the skinny animal in lean times. Violence is often a reaction to the fight/flight response when an animal is threatened. We're fortunate enough to be able to decide to not act on those instincts, and instead do something more intelligent. (Well, most people are, anyway.) Our frontal lobes have gotten large enough to be able to control the 'less civilized' parts of our brain, although we can never leave their effects behind completely. RMURRAY 1 #48 March 4, 2006 Quote>The complexity of the vehicles, questions about battery life >and replacement cost and a lack of independent repair shops that >will work on hybrids all result in extra depreciation costs . . . . I remember the same being said for fuel injection, computerized ignition controls and catalytic converters. (How do you find a car shop that will work on a _computer_?) Nowadays all cars have these. Hybrids will be similar. In ten years most cars will have some form of hybrid drive. In many cases this won't be for fuel savings or emissions reduction, but cost savings. Belts, power steering pumps, and air conditioning compressors will soon be replaced by electrically driven versions of these same devices to reduce maintenance costs. And to get enough power to drive all these, some form of hybrid drive will be used. The 'weakest' form of this will be a 42 volt motor/generator, a 2-3 kilowatt shaft driven motor generator that will generate power to run all those accessories, restart the car after stops and provide a small amount of 'boost' during acceleration. It will also give you an increase of a few MPG, which is a selling point. Going to 42 volts will also allow manufacturers to reduce wire gauges significantly. Copper costs about $10/pound when fabricated into wire harnesses, so cutting 30 pounds of wiring from a vehicle (half the wire weight) could save $300 in manufacturing costs - and cut gas usage a bit more. Going to higher voltages (as the current hybrids do) could save more money, but battery costs start going up. But the big thing that will drive long term acceptance of hybrids will be performance. Hybrids have the ability to deliver much higher levels of performance than purely gas-driven vehicles, since the torque curve of an electric motor is almost perfectly flat - at least, up to base speed. Internal combustion engines peak at higher RPM's, so the combination of the two makes a very powerful vehicle. So far, hybrids have been designed for fuel economy rather than power, and thus haven't been part of this market. But once the performance hybrid market opens up, you'll see people willing to spend an extra $5000 for the fastest thing on the block. I agree completely. the price will come down. what we need now in North America is more small high tech diesels like they have in Europe. I would buy one before a hybrid. I am in automotive design and have been reading about 42 Volt electrical systems for years - when will they be introduced - no doubt BMW or MB will be first. rm

The adoption and manufacture of (and hopefully profit from selling) smaller scale fuel cells can only help increase our engineering knowledge of them and decrease the amount of extra infrastructure needed to get fuel cells in more places.
