The Top Nightmare for Democrats?

There's some polling going on indicating that Condoleeza Rice has the approval to make a serious bid for the Presidency in 2008. Personally, I don't think she has a big chance. Though I'm not his biggest fan (thanks to some 80's scandals) I think McCain has the best chance - more than anyone, he can beat any Democrat.

But can you imagine the fit liberals and the Democratic prty leadership will throw if that happens? Could there be a bigger nightmare for them than the first female president and the first black president being a Republican?

Maybe the predicted "fit" would be thrown over the fact that a conservative, not a liberal black woman had not been elected; not that it was "anyone but Bush."

I'm sure that most liberals would not simply be happy with another conservative as long as it's "anyone but Bush"; they're gonna want a liberal in office. (Which ain't too likely, I'm happy to say.)

I'm not only a liberal, but a (gasp) woman, and I wouldn't be particularly chagrined either.

I wonder if more conservatives would be smug than liberals would be chagrined ?

Of course some liberals would feel as though they'd been upstaged. But I rather doubt they're as monolithically petty as is being painted. Many would be thrilled that the thought of a woman running for president or vice president is institutionalized enough that a Republican can do it.

Shirley Chisholm was the first woman (and a black one) to put up a real run for the presidency. Geraldine Ferraro was the first female major party candidate for vice-president. Yes, that was a ludicrous ticket.

Edited to add: a McCain/Rice ticket would be virtually unbeatable. I hope the Republicans don't put some party hack yes-man (which Bush really seemed to be from the outside in 2000) up against him because he's not malleable enough.

They'd be more chagrined by the fact that she defined the term 'yes man' in her role as advisor to the president.

No worries though - the chance of her winning the GOP's nomination in 2008 is somewhere behind that of J.C. walking the earth again. So only one guy in this forum sees it happening.

Veep slot - different matter entirely. I think the GOP could tip a close race to their side with a woman in the second slot, could steal some of the female vote. Seems more likely there than on the Democratic side for now - who besides Clinton is even a possibility? Feinstein is the only other heavy, but was already too old a while back.

You're probably right about that. As usual, they would go into scramble/panic reaction mode, say all kinds of dumb sh.t, and end up shooting themselves in the foot, as they have done in the last two presidential elections. I don't expect that would change.

Certainly can't argue with that, but being the moderate that he is jeopardizes his chances to even get nominated, since it's the extreme wing of the party that equates "moderate" (and he's a conservative moderate at that) with LIBERAL .

FWIW, I find both Condi and Hillary to be dull, wooden speakers. When Condi testifies before some committee, she seems so awkward speaking extemporaneously. Hillary's slightly better, but not really much. Both very, very bright, but...wooden. That kind of candidate puts me to sleep.

I don't really know what that is. The people I know in the real world who are very liberal are surgeons, radiologists, principal investigators, CEO's, engineers with the space program etc. They can reason pretty well, and explain things pretty concisely.

Now, on HERE I see some people who fall into the category you probably want to define with your statement above. I also see a lot of stereotypical conservatives; people who defend GWB the way Imelda Marcos bought shoes. But I don't think many of those are 'real' - they can't be this way in real life. I think they are either creating an online persona that they have fun with, or the computer brings out a more thoughtless side of them.

It doesn't matter what the dems do. They are done. They are consistently losing at ALL LEVELS. The repubs could put Charles Manson on the ticket and he would still beat the best thing the dems can muster. Personally, I hate the things the right has been doing, but I am smart enough to know that there will be no changing it. Therefore, I have to take the least worst choice: John McCain.

After McCain, the GOP are in no better shape for 2008. There's not a leader in the lot - why else did they have to hunt for a Bush son to get past their losing way of the 90s?

It's going to be the most uninspiring election we've seen since, well, 2000.

If everything else was equal I would agree. But people are now being given a choice between the party of apathy and indecision and the party of corruption, torture and pointless war. And as the polls show, people are shifting over to the lesser of two evils.

Dems are going to start picking up more and more seats in Congress as time goes on. This is not due to anything the democrats did, but rather what people like George Bush, Donald Rumsfeld, Scooter Libby, Duke Cunningham and Tom DeLay have done.

FWIW, as attractive a candidate as McCain may be (and I’m sure he’d get a lot of cross-over votes), he will be age 72 in 2008. That’s 76 at the end of a first term. 80 at the end of a 2nd term. Shit happens, in a very natural way, to people in that age range. He's also a cancer survivor. So age and health are not unreasonable factors.
