About those celebs who said they'd move out of the U.S. if Bush won

Recommended Posts

So, I checked Snopes.com

They had this to say

I like this part, especially. What a lying, stupid ass that Robert Altman is. Note where they say he denied his statement even though it was filmed.

Quote

Robert Altman, who had since re-interpreted his previous remarks, was disinclined to offer further comment:

Second up the gangplank was the film director Robert Altman, the man behind such films as Short Cuts and The Player. "If George Bush gets elected President, I will move back to France," he told reporters at the Cannes film festival. "He's not a very smart man. He's been put up by his father and a bunch of cronies." Despite the fact that this statement was caught on film, Altman later denied making it. He meant to say, he said, that he would move to Paris, Texas, "because the state would be better off if [Bush] is out of it".

Did you ever really believe any of these statements from celebs when they made them?

These people live in a fantasy world. No reason to believe them on anything.

And yet, they are constantly consulted on what they think on political and social issues.

Angelina Jolie.
Sean Penn.
Alec Baldwin.
Susan Sarandon.
Cher.
Michael Stipe.
who knows how many others.

Why do we know what they think? Because the media have brought news of it to us. So somebody thinks that we're supposed to let these people's views and opinions guide us in shaping our own. >:(

Exactly. And that someone is us. If no one watched Angelina Jolie's commentary on the pitfalls of deficit spending, then no one would have Angelina Jolie on their shows. We, through our viewing and spending habits, determine what we see on TV.

I dont think consulted is the right word. When you consult someone you place a value on their advice and might act on it. Like you would consult a tax attorney or a a CPA. What celebs do is give their opinion. Like the nut job, scientologist Cruise on Ophra. Also these people live in a world so far removed from reality. I remember reading a story of some actor crashing his Porsche and walking into a dealership just to buy a new one within a few hours of his accident.

I haven't consulted them. Have you? Do you actually KNOW anyone who has consulted them?

Angelina Jolie goes on UN fact finding missions and is welcomed at very high-level meetings to lend her opinion and bring her considerable power of influence to bear on making a positive change in the world. She visits Darfur and Afghanistan and Haiti in the safest way possible and witnesses the poverty and war damage and devastation for herself. She's also been known to donate heavily to her causes ($5 millionish in Cambodia a refuge or rainforest).

So, yeah, I'd listen to her about this stuff.

you've got to ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel loquacious?' -- well do you, punk?

I understand the feeling about celebs speaking out on politics: what the hell are their qualifications? Well, I suppose their qualifications are no more, but also no less, than those of any other citizen. But their celebrity empowers them by giving them an outlet to (at least they hope) effect some actual change by being able to influence public opinion. Bono, for example, has used his celebrity as a force for social good, as did Princess Diana (re: land mines, etc.). Decrying entertainers as too liberal is hardly a new sport. Witness the Hollywood blacklists in the 1950's, for example.

Yes, entertainment celebs often tend to be more liberal than conservative, but not always. Bob Hope and Bing Crosby used their celebrity for public causes, but for fairly conservative or “traditional patriotic” causes; certainly not in a liberal fashion. More recently, entertainers have held political office as Republicans. There’s Ronald Reagan, Clint Eastwood, and Sonny Bono, for example. Jesse Ventura was an Independent, although more on the libertarian-to-conservative side than the liberal. Arnold Schwartzenegger is a Republican (although he’s pissing off local Republicans; but he’s also refused clemency in death penalty cases). Charlton Heston is a Republican and past president of the National Rifle Association and campaigned very publicly to maintain the right of gun ownership. Comedian Dennis Miller is a Republican and stumps for Republican candidates. If Lynn Swann (former Pittsburgh Steeler) runs for governor in Pennsylvania, it will be as a Republican (in fact, it’s pretty common for athlete celebrities to enter politics as Republicans).

Side note: other actors/entertainers who are (or were; now deceased) Republicans include: Danny Aiello, Dixie Carter, Mickey Rooney, John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart, Rip Torn, Bo Derek, Robert Conrad, Robert Duvall, Alice Cooper (no shit; that surprised me, too), Ted Nugent, Kelsey Grammer, Drew Carey, Tony Danza, and Kurt Russell, to name a few.

Which celebs?
George W. Bush
Ted Kennedy
Hillary Clinton
Tom Delay
Rush Limbaugh
Al Franken
Michael Moore
Ann Coulter

Those celebs? I agree, they live in a fantasy world and there's no reason to believe them on anything.

Let me see if I got this right. You are ranting about what these people had to say and ranting about people who pay attention to what they say??? :S ;)

I think Johnny Depp made the same claim.

He moved.

So, I actually respect him for that.
I do not agree with his reason, but applaud his conviction.

His conviction on that is questionably respectable.

I see it as being a whiny, petulant baby who storms off in a tantrum when things don't go his way. A real man would stay in a great country even if it is having troubles and try to better it. The pansies run off to other countries that they pretend are more free, etc.

Funny, Depp didn't make his million$ in France, he made them right fuckin' here in this awful, leaving-worthy country. :S

Don't mistake "being aware that they've voiced opinions publicly with help from the media to get them heard," with "I hung on their every word and will do as they command." That's what I don't like, and as someone said about how if Oprah eschewed toilet paper we should refrain from shaking hands from now on, I get the feeling that plenty of people (ignoramuses, mostly) actually use what they've heard these celebriots say to form their political views.

Trying to catch me in a childish game of, "Oh, so you were 'listening' to them, Jeff?" is pretty silly. You and I both know I don't mean "hearing their voices" the same as "mimicking their ideas."

So those who said they'd leave and didn't are "lying stupid asses".

And those who said they'd leave and did are "whiny petulant babies", right?

I just want to make sure about this.

I will never understand why people get so bent out of shape about celebs with a political message. How is what they do any different than what we do here in speakers corner? You believe in something, so you post about it and talk to your friends and anyone else who will listen hoping to change people's minds and get them on board for your cause.

Should the fact that they are celebrities and have access to more people than you do mean they shouldn't be entitled to use any means at their disposal to rally support for their cause? Everyone in SC posts here because it gives them the ability to get their message out to as many people as possible. If you had the ability to have your feelings/opinions printed in every magazine, would you stop speaking, or would your message change? Their opinions are no more or less valid than yours or mine, they just have a bigger audience.

To your statement about them saying they would leave the country, lots of people said that about Bush. Lots of people said that about Clinton. Do you think that you or anyone else on SC has never felt so strongly or been so over zealous about something that you may have said something a little stronger than you should have? Maybe said something that although you though it, you wished you wouldn't have said it in you outside voice. Why should their statements be etched in stone and yours shouldn't.

I also find it funny that every time I hear people complain about celebs being political it is about those damn whiney liberals. I don't hear you bitching about Charlton Heston's political message. What about the right wing celebs like Bruce Willis, Patricia Heaton, Ron Silver, Arnold Schwarzenegger (before actually running for office), Andy Garcia, Dennis Hopper...etc. Is it OK for celebs to have a political agenda as long as they jive with yours?

I feel it is not about "talking the talk" but actually backing it up and "walking the walk".

By all means if you or I have the ability to reach millions with our point of veiw do so!

The difference is we here tend to vote (A celeb went on TV spouting off at the mouth about voting and then didn't!), we tend to act (in addition to voting), we tend to fall through with our convictions, as best as I can tell.

I hate both parties and the whole system. They are a bunch of Felons with no police force to police them. But it is just my opinion, the felons part.
An Instructors first concern is student safety.
So, start being safe, first!!!

I personally don't agree they use their fame to reach a personal agenda. Many of us have much certainty of the vanity of their lives and how much they care for others....

Let me give you an example, Sean Penn, going to Baghdad, and claiming to be a peacefull envoy, while at home, he gets charged with assault, aggravated assault, domestic violence, and yet he made himself an ambassador of peace....:S.

And unfortunately they have fans who try to be like them, and idolize them in everyway, even if common sense tells anyone lightly capable of comprehension, that no one should follow on their footsteps, as they make a living pretending to be people they are not.

>I personally don't agree they use their fame to reach a personal agenda.

True; most don't. It's just the more vocal ones you hear about.

>And unfortunately they have fans who try to be like them, and
>idolize them in everyway . . .

Why not? In a capitalist society, the one who makes the most money wins. Tom Hanks, Bruce Springsteen, Bono - they are the pinnacle of achievement by those definitions. A lot of people aspire to that goal.

>even if common sense tells anyone lightly capable of
> comprehension, that no one should follow on their footsteps, as

I think perhaps your spellchecker is messing up your message.

Who cares what a bunch of bitching and whining rich assholes who don't even have real jobs say? They get paid millions to fucking act, they have no credibility, and are bunch of idealistic idiots. They're insignificant pricks who everyone should pay no attention to.
