Nightingale 0 #3 February 23, 2006 This is probably a really dumb question, but what the heck does Britain want with the six counties anyway? I've been doing a lot of reading about it, and I haven't been able to find out what the British actually get out of keeping them.
bob.dino 1 #4 February 24, 2006 Most English people would happily let the six counties float off into the North Atlantic if there were no consequences. In no particular order, there's a number of reasons they stay: Last vestiges of Empire thinking. This is also where the chant "No Surrender to the IRA" comes in. 55-60% of Northern Ireland wants to be part of the United Kingdom. Guilt for creating the whole mess in the first place. Most protestants in Northern Ireland are descendants of Scottish Presbyterians 'encouraged' to move to NI. More recently, the Parachute Regiment killing 13 unarmed civilians was responsible for radicalising much of the Catholic population. There'd be a civil war if the UK pulled out; the Republican and Unionist politicians have the maturity of six-year-olds. Civil wars on your doorstep are bad for business. bob.dino 1 #5 February 24, 2006 QuoteUnless of course it's those "Lovable-Rogues", The IRA! The US has a long history of condoning and supporting terrorism, whether covertly or overtly. QuoteMaybe what Muslim terrorists are lacking is a bit of wistful poetry to mix in with their bombings. They're missing a large and powerful voting block within the US. He kept jumping back & forth across the Turkey-Iraq border just to confuse me! So... What makes a terrorist a freedom-fighter? If it's not the Wistful-Poetry, then what is it? Surely it's not the Potato-Eating... It CAN'T be The Bushmills - The Prods make that! Mike. Taking the piss out of the FrenchAmericans since before it was fashionable. miked10270 0 #9 February 24, 2006 QuoteMaybe it has something to do with sheep? Hmmm... I always thought of "Sheep" as a pacifying influence. While your Highland-Scot & Welshman shout about "Throwing off the hated English Yoke", they never actually do that much about it. I think it's all just big-talk to impress a particularly seductive sheep. I'm guessing it's the similar in New-Zealand - except the Aussies deserve everything that's said about them! I do know that the "Overwhelming-Odds" the Irish face is a direct result of The Guinness... They end up seeing 2 of everything - including Englishmen! Mike.
