BY LESLEY CLARKlclark@MiamiHerald.com WASHINGTON - President Bush is taking a battering from fellow Republicans, even the governors of New York and Maryland, over the administration's support for a decision that gives an Arab company control of some commercial operations at six major seaports -- including Miami-Dade's. But he got a boost Monday from an unlikely source, frequent critic and former president Jimmy Carter, who downplayed fears that the deal poses a risk. ''The overall threat to the United States and security, I don't think it exists,'' Carter said on CNN's The Situation Room. ``I'm sure the president's done a good job with his subordinates to make sure this is not a threat.'' rehmwa 2 #3 February 21, 2006 Finally, the DNC strategy machine is figuring out how to appeal to anyone not on the far extreme fringe. An endorsement by Jimmy Carter is the kiss of death. On the radio this morning, all the stations: right wing, left wing, shock jocks, morning typical, etc, every single DJ couldn't even say the name "Jimmy Carter" without a hint of laughter in his voice (or actually direct out loud laughter). ... Gravitymaster 0 #4 February 21, 2006 Have you taken the time to try and understand why Carter supports this, or have you been taken in once again by the conventional wisdom?
rehmwa 2 #5 February 21, 2006 QuoteWhat more confirmation is needed that the idea is stupid? does it for me - if the criteria for bid was followed, then the process and criteria needs to be revised - if GWB can't get behind that, then it's another step backwards it's a good thumbrule - Jimmy Carters thinks it's a good thing, then look at it hard, because Jimmy doesn't have a good track record for executive level type stuff. He's better at the nuts and bolts of things. ... Personally, I think that Americans are far too quick to denigrate Carter. For example; Carter inherited the USDoD at it's nadir both in terms of morale and funding. It was Carter who authorised the first major increases in Defence Spending and the rebuilding of the American Military into its present omnipotent form, which the American People commonly credit to Reagan. Then again, quite a lot about American Presidents seems to slip under the notice of American Voters... Like the fact that Reagan was a Nuclear Abolitionist! Mike. Carter, as a president, one of the worst matches of job and personality ever. People make the mistake of tying a bad situation to a misread of calling the person evil. Just because they are public. But that's happened to every president since the beginning. ... dontbounce 0 #9 February 23, 2006 Carter has a point. With 99.7% of every Arab on the planet thinking the "Bushies" are out to "git em", Bush is probably just throwing a little KY Kelly on the Arab Demographic you know?... Afganistan in 01, Iraq in 02, Iran in 06 and maybe Uzbekistan in 07 (if they cop an attitude). 25 cent gas and Hummers for everybody!... "Hey Dick, how many army guys do we have left?" A cowboy wet dream. It probably does him some good to at least take a shot at not looking like some sort of Nucular Capable Christian Crusader bent on destrying the muslim world... Probably not a wise move politically though. Somebody should have caught that one. Lets see, libby is under indictment, Rove is down town testifying in front of a grand jury, Cheney is drinking and playing with firearms (it's Lawyer season ya know), and Georgie is listening to "hooked on Phonics" in the oval office, while mouthing the word "Nu-Ca-Ler" to himself. Who else is left in the white house except the receptionist and the cook? It was probably "Larry" the guy in charge of telling the president about major hurricanes that destroy large american cities (sorry boss), or maybe "Jimbo" the guy in charge of double checking WMD Intelligence (my bad)... The democrats have been itching for some foothold in the National Security angle. Now they have it.
