Trent 0 #1 February 15, 2006 So I was listening to the radio this morning and they were talking about how the new Houston soccer team had to be re-named because it was deemed (by whom, I'm not sure) that their first name was offensive to someone. Yeah, that's right... a soccer team. Apparently, the original name "1836" (kinda like the 76ers) is offensive to Mexicans since that is the year that Sam Houston defeated Santa Ana and won independence for Texas. So they're actually changing the name because actual history is offensive to them. Is this just ridiculous or what?Oh, hello again!

Trent 0 #3 February 15, 2006 Yeah, I feel the same way, but I'm an evil whitey oppressor so you never know... I was thinking that maybe we should stop celebrating the 4th of July since it might offend some British people. We should also rename Houston since it is offensive that we have a city named after the guy who defeated Santa Ana... shit... guess we'll have to rename Washington too.Oh, hello again! Trent 0 #6 February 15, 2006 but but but... then the Canadians' very existence would offend us former Americans and something would just HAVE to be done so no one was offended. Maybe then Canada could hand us back over to the French, British, and Mexicans... who in turn would have to hand us back to the Indians, who in turn would have to wait for the landbridge to be uncovered again so they could leave and have the former Canadian-American-Mexican-French-British territories turned back over to the animals and trees who were here first. Of course, then someone will start worrying about those damned dinosaurs and their delicate sensibilities.Oh, hello again!

Rebecca 0 #9 February 15, 2006 Toto, I have a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore... ...or Texas for that matter. Since when did we get annexed by Mexico? I don't give a crap what offends Mexicans in Texas. If they're just visiting, they can go home. If they're here to stay (legally!), they can shut up and be happy they're already in the US instead of at a pitstop on the way. And if it's Mexican Americans complaining, they all deserve a hard swift kick to the nuts. With a toepick. you've got to ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel loquacious?' -- well do you, punk? SpeedRacer 1 #14 February 15, 2006 are these people aware that the Mexicans in Texas in 1836 fought on the side of Sam Houston AGAINST Santa Ana??? YTF are they offended? and are they offended that they live in a city called "Houston???" masterblaster72 0 #15 February 15, 2006 QuoteYeah, that's right... a soccer team. They're probably changing the name for business reasons after they realized that Mexicans will likely make up a large part of the fan base since Americans don't have much interest in the sport...I doubt they would take that measure if Houston was to name a hockey team after the year 1836. Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.
Trent 0 #16 February 15, 2006 QuoteI wonder what would happen to the economy in the southern parts of the US if all Mexicans left... What does that have to do with anything? If visiting Mexicans are offended, they will eventually go home where they can be not-offended. If they're here legally, they should be happy that Texas won its independence as it is currently providing them with their homes and jobs. Mexican-Americans in Texas should also be proud that we kicked Santa Ana's ass because many of their ancestors fought alongside the Texan army. We can't apologize when it is our very existance that is offensive to someone. (That goes for more situations than just this) So again, what did this have to do with Mexicans leaving?Oh, hello again! DING DING DING! We have a winner folks. Soccer teams are still businesses too, and there may be no more sure fire way to sink a business than pissing off your key demographic. The MLS has been limping along for almosta decade now, and I'm sure the majority of people who would pay to go watch the MLS in Houston are latinos. It may not be right, it may be ridiculous, but why should the team owner torque off paying customers just to make a point? SkyDekker 1,465 #23 February 15, 2006 Say something negative to one of the popular girls and watch all the testostorone heavy guys flock and jump in...I feel like I am watching a high school dance.... The attitude on display was, deal with us (I guess dominant immigrants) as a minority immigrant and be greatful or get the hell out. There are quite a few illegal immigrants that perform work at wages many (in this particular case) americans would not be willing to. Hence it was a side note that an off the cuff remark like that, when brought to fruition could and very likely would have some very serious consequences. I think it is pretty clear when you see how much is communicated in Spanish in the southern parts of the US. Business realizes they ahve to keep them happy and communicate with them in their language. That isn't PC that is capitalism. The question itself shows the lack of understanding in PC. This is the case of a private business coming to the understanding they will make more money if they change their name. Once again that isn't PC, that is capitalism. This is the case of a private business coming to the understanding they will make more money if they change their name. Once again that isn't PC, that is capitalism. While the decision to change names may have been based on expected monetary gain... the REAL question IS about PC... the real question is about how stupid people can be with any issue. Even a non-offensive one like when Texas won their independence. I think the team owners are pussies for changing the name because someone got their feelings hurt. I also think that anyone offended by the name "1863" is a dumb-shit. Most of the hispanic people that called the show were not offended by the name, but then it was a conservative station. I have a feeling that the team MIGHT lose 1% of their ticket sales because of the name... so what does that add up to 5-10 tickets?Oh, hello again! GTAVercetti 0 #25 February 15, 2006 QuoteSay something negative to one of the popular girls and watch all the testostorone heavy guys flock and jump in...I feel like I am watching a high school dance.... Yeah, that is exactly what happened. I do it all the time. In fact, the only posts I make in SC is in defense of popular girls. That's it. Not wait, no it isn't. Her overall theme was that people, who happen to be Mexicans in this case, should stop wasting time bitching about shit like this. And somehow you equate that notion with "All you Mexicans should get the fuck out" when no sane person would make that connection. Let me put the two basic ideas side by side since it seems to be difficult to grasp the difference: "All the Mexicans bitching about a fucking team name should suck it up and deal with it or leave." "All you Mexicans should leave our country." If you cannot see the difference between a subset of the group doing the complaining and the entire group, there is really nothing I can do to help you. It has nothing to do with immigrants being a minority. It just happened that the people who did the complaining were Mexican and that is who Rebecca pointed her indignation at. The fact that they are immigrants was incidental to everyone save you. And yes, this post WAS condescending. On the other note...capitalism...I really don't care WHAT the reason was for the name change. If they did it for money, smart move. But the fact that someone took offense to it in the first place just shows how thin our skins have really become. THAT is what bothers me.Why yes, my license number is a palindrome. Thank you for noticing.
