no no no - he's subhuman. Didn't you read his TITLE?

next thing you know they'll start getting uppity and demand to ride up front with all the edjimicated types - property values will go down, people will start listening to their opinions, cats and dogs, living together. Best just to leave it to the aristocracy to take care of everyone.

won't somebody PLEASE think of the children

I've seen long and protracted discussions on dropzone.com about whether people who only do tandems can be called skydivers.

When one is immersed in a world where a particular title is important, well, then it becomes important. But people both inside and outside that world will probably be happier if they just remember that the usage of the word changes depending on the context. Oh. wait. have we had this discussion before? :)

My father was a tenured professor at 3 (count 'em --3) separate universities . Not sure if he was a full professor, but definitely tenured.

well kallend if you are more QUALIFIED than Dr. Lott please enlighten us if not do not demean a man who has spent most of his adult life in pusuit of academic prowess and FACT.

I myself will never nit pick someone over title which can be in most cases irrelevant.

in this case the man IS QUALIFIED on this subject :|

Qualified? According to the many references I previously quoted, the accuracy of his research is in doubt.

Picking nits is what academics are paid for. It's a rotten job but someone has to do it.

We'd probably see crime rates drop quicker if they confiscated our TV sets...

Good post, ROK. I am right there with you -- something is different about this generation that's growing up (or the one that just grew up) from how we were. Like you, I'm seeing this ...unbridledness in them -- an utter lack of learned self-control. Whatever they want, they take. Whatever they want to do, they do. Doesn't matter if it's antisocial or violent or even murderous.

Your last line reminds me of a quote from a song in the remake of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory:

Quote

The most important thing
that we've ever learned
The most important thing we've learned
as far as children are concerned
is never never let them near
the television set
Or better yet just don't install
the idiotic thing at all...

:D

TK, I would suggest reading a very well researched book that directly and eruditely contradicts your incorrect thesis by Professor John Lott...

More Guns LESS Crime.

Not only is John Lott NOT a professor, his research has been thoroughly debunked on account of serious methodological errors.

You mean like cherry-picking individual U.S. counties in order to make statistics fit his argument?

Oh, wait, that wasn't LOTT, that was the anti-gun ARTHUR KELLERMAN, the idiot liar who brought you the, "Your gun is 43 times more likely to kill you or a loved one than an intruder" garbage.

Lott was the first one who used ALL of data available from ALL U.S. counties in his statistical analysis.

Maybe we can remember that moron who wrote the book "Arming America," which tried to disprove the notion that early Americans held guns near and dear. That loser claimed to have used materials in his research that had been destroyed after the big earthquake in San Francisco in the early 20th century...

We can send you to any number of websites that debunk anti-gun nonsense, kallend. What do you have besides an empty claim that Lott has been debunked, to prove that he's been debunked?

It's very clear that you desperately don't want to believe his research, so you'll make up any unfounded claim against him.

assistant professor and professor are not the same.

My assistant has nowhere near my qualifications or experience. If she went out and claimed she held my position, that would be a lie.

Does your assistant professor have a PhD in economics? :S

You people are being pathetic, splitting hairs about whether someone has the actual title "professor."

How much more OBVIOUS can you get that you don't have a thing to say to counter his statements?

oh good lord. this is just nit-pickery nonsense.

he has a fucking PhD (or did you and skydekker find something to criticize about that? not from a valid institution? not from one you like?) and was TEACHING at some rather prestigious institutions.

and, criticisms of his research aside, if you look at crime stats for states that have concealed carry permits, you'll see IN EVER CASE a drop in violent crimes after the laws were passed. That will NOT be found in the People's Republic of Chicago, Our Nation's Capital, etc. etc.

And that, my full Professors, is the principle of MORE GUNS, LESS CRIME!

Deserved a repeat, Micro. Nice job. :)

I didn't call him a liar. In my first post on the subject I clearly stated that if he claimed to be a professor, that would be a lie.

I also said that claiming to be a professor when you are not is a lie.

I didn't say he claimed to be a professor. I do know others do. Which makes for an interesting question. If other publicly call him a professor and he doesn't counter that, does that still make him a liar? I think so.

That's idiotic.

I might as well say that if SkyDekker claims to be an astronaut, he's a liar.

Kinda:
1) makes an implication that you have claimed to be an astronaut
2) then calls you a liar for something you didn't even do

And you honestly think that if someone makes a claim about another person and it's untrue, that person is guilty of the lie?

WTF, man? It's just bizarre, and scary, that you believe that. :S

No wonder anti-gunners think that gun companies should pay for what criminals do with guns. (But amazingly don't believe that liquor, car, baseball bat and knife companies should bear the same responsibility...)

They have zero understanding of the concepts involved.

I wouldn't mind a review by someone qualified that doesn't have a political stand in the matter.

Well, the Centers for Disease Control did analyze something like 50-odd studies on gun control, and despite the political activism in the CDC (they funded Kellerman, after all), they were forced to announce that they could NOT correlate gun control laws of any kind with reduction of gun crime. And you know they would have loved to have been able to do so.

I think that goes some distance toward your request, anyway.

Another 747 right over your head.....

Since nobody cares about titles in here, I am now the President of The United States of America. I wonder whta would happen if I start making speeches or publishing books under that title.

Or, starts wearing military outfits, including a green beret, with SF unit badges, calling myself a general. I wonder if people would still not care about titles.

I wonder how some on these forums would feel if I started claiming I was a US marine...it is only a title, it really means nothing.

Is a major the same as a major general? If a major has a Ph.D, would that make him a general?

If you don't believe in the meaning of words, why bother posting here?

I already posted links with counters to Lott's poor quality research. Why ever do you think Lott never got tenure at any of the many universities he peddled himself to?

Here's a great idea John, how about the rapper's quit glamourizing busting a cap in someone's ass?

they are supposed to be singing? aren't they?

oh wait that's right singer is synonomous with murderer, wait... that's right I guess they are correct?:S

these rappers couldn't have beaten Martha Raye in a gun battle!(BTW Martha Raye was officially made a Green Beret) you may think she wasn't, she actually supported the Special Forces at home, in the field and actually in combat at A team firebases, in the line of fire, and she actually engaged the enemy in battle.:)
Blaming gun owners for the social ills of our country makes all the sense of Rosie O' Donnell blaming forks for her fat ass.

How many legal concealed carry permit holders have illegally shot someone?

How many legal concealed carry permit holders have legally shot someone in self defense, or in the defense of someone who could not defend themselves, in order to keep from being murdered?

How many legal concealed carry permit holders have come to the aid of police officers in their time of need?

these statistics have been compiled and are availible for review by anyone at www.nra.org

John if you have nothing to fear from people who do not legally own a gun, I propose this social experiment.

I suggest you take a walk westward towards the edens expressway from hyde park, and walk a few blocks back and forth ...hell even stop by a liqour store and get some Malt liqour in those nice 40oz cans.
(actually don't do it because I do care about you and would kill someone on sight on your behalf if they threatened your life, because after all I do like you);)

the problem is not guns, the problem is the criminals!

In the UK especially around blackpool and manchester, there are criminals who do have guns.

In fact they have knocked on doors and splashed someone with gasoline as they answer then igniting them, should the british government blame the gasoline?

I have a friend that stopped one of these assaults with a Mini FN/FAL. He was allowed to have that weapon at home as part of his job.

You see what happened was a man 3 doors away reported the drug dealers for their illegal activities and in retaliation, the drug dealers decided to burn him alive.

It's a good thing my friend was out tending his garden, and was aware enough to spot the car as it pulled up, and the criminals got the gasoline out of the car boot!

He came out of his house and they were already ringing the innocent mans doorbell (BTW that man has 3 kids and a wife in the house with him)

Did shouting stop or I will call the police help? nooooo they turned and said we will kill you too! but, when he brought his weapon up they did seem to want to comply(strange huh?):o

My friend has had to move, as he has now exposed who he is, and what he does for a living.[:/]

well I hope these instances shed some light on what the real problem is....not legal gun owners but the illegal action of criminals.:|

yeah I guess it's just a disgrace when an old lady donates all her time, her money, and any resources she could scrounge up, to honor, and aid those brave men. Plus the fact she had more balls than a few of the people who post on here.

how many of you peacemongers and anti gunners have faced an armed opponent? an did not flinch! and distinguished yourselves in battle?...much less and old woman?

some of you don't have the guts that even julia child had.

this was not a personal attack but an astute observation.;)

HAVE YOU PERSONALLY DONE ANYTHING LIKE THAT?

I think you just made my point. Thank you!!!!!

Funny how titles are important when they are important to you, but easily disgarded when it means nothing to you.......
