Michele 1 #1 February 5, 2006 Apparently, Iran has been referred to the UN Security Council for violations regarding their nuclear enrichment program. (Link). Iran, however, has stated that this referral will end diplomatic efforts as well as inspectins Link. McCain spoke today, saying that while it was the last option, military involvement has not been taken off the table. Meanwhile, Israel has been very clear that any nuclear power in the area will not be allowed to take hold, especially if their President has threatened anhiliation of the State of Israel. Apparently, the global community has taken strong steps to communicate in no uncertain terms that a nuclear Iran is not acceptable. I know there is something upcoming in March with regards to the IAEA's full report, but this interim move is very interesting. I believe that things are going to get much worse before they get better...I can only hope that Iran's refusal of diplomacy was a momentary lapse in judgment and that they pick it up again. I don't think they will, however...and that's a concern. Ciels- Michele ~Do Angels keep the dreams we seek While our hearts lie bleeding?~
kschilk 0 #2 February 5, 2006 Arabs (Iranians....same diff) memories must be shorter than their....well, you know. Iraq tried that, Israel blew it up....even managed to get rid of some French trash, in the process. They enjoyed it so much, they went back and did it again! I wonder if the Iranians have their own version of the Simpsons? D'oh!"T'was ever thus."
Trent 0 #3 February 5, 2006 It IS interesting to see who voted against the referral... namely Venezuela and Cuba. Not surprising though. It's also interesting to see that Russia and China want any discussion delayed until March. Add that extra month to the 2 years it'll take the UNSC to get anything together and the Iranians will have the bomb soon enough. The only hope here is that a UN embargo COULD incite a revolution in Iran that ends in a better government. Not likely, but we can hope.Oh, hello again! I think they meant any other nuclear power in the area. Eugene . "In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move." Just playing the devil's advocate here, you mean like the revolution where a democratic goverment in Iran was toppled because that goverment was leaning towards being pro soviet during the cold war? I don't pretend to know much, but i'm genuinely curious. How many of those who voted for the referral have nuclear arsenals of their own? Eugene . "In the beginning the Universe was created. Except now, from what I hear from people and media, it seems the people of Iran are largely pro-western. It's the government (that was overthrown by the religious nut-jobs) that can't seem to get along with the world, not the people. But that's just what I hear. QuoteI don't pretend to know much, but i'm genuinely curious. How many of those who voted for the referral have nuclear arsenals of their own? Hmmm... off the top of my head? The US, some EU countries, Israel, Russia, China... A lot of non-nuclear countries also voted to refer Iran to the UN security council.Oh, hello again!
