Julian Bond

Civil rights activist and NAACP Chairman Julian Bond delivered a blistering partisan speech at Fayetteville State University in North Carolina last night, equating the Republican Party with the Nazi Party and characterizing Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and her predecessor, Colin Powell, as "tokens."

"The Republican Party would have the American flag and the swastika flying side by side," he charged.

Calling President Bush a liar, Bond told the audience at the historically black institution that this White House's lies are more serious than the lies of his predecessor's because Clinton's lies didn't kill people.

"We now find ourselves refighting old battles we thought we had already won," he said. "We have to fight discrimination whenever it raises its ugly head."

He referred to former Attorney General John Ashcroft as J. Edgar Ashcroft. He compared Bush's judicial nominees to the Taliban.

The talk so infuriated at least one black family in attendance among the 900 in the auditorium that they got up and walked out in protest.

"He went on and on name calling," said Lee Wilson. "I walked out in the middle of his speech with my wife and three kids"

The harsh partisan rhetoric from Bond should not have surprised anyone who has followed him in recent years.

In July 2001, Bond said, "[Bush] has selected nominees from the Taliban wing of American politics, appeased the wretched appetites of the extreme right wing, and chosen Cabinet officials whose devotion to the Confederacy is nearly canine in its uncritical affection."

And he wonders why Bush won't meet with the NAACP.:S:S

Fixed it, although there's little difference btw the message conveyed by the Nazi and CSA flags.
Illinois needs a CCW Law. NOW.

Like Cindy Sheehan, I'm sure Bond is another far-lefter not many mainstream Dems will actually admit to supporting.

Spew hate and divide people has pretty much become SOP for the Libs. I'm predictiing it will take the loss of one more Presidential election and a few more seats in the House and Senate before they finally figure out people are turned off by their tactics. More blacks are turning away from the NAACP because of leaders like Bond.

Hell the American Nazi Party lost a LOT of thier support from members in the last election. They voted GOP instead.. just like alot of the other extremist groups.

How the fuck would you know that?

Did you somehow:
- identify every voter who is an American Nazi Party member
- follow them to every polling place in America
- watch how they voted in their booths?

Oh, and not just the Nazis but "other extremist groups"?

So, PETA members voted for Bush?
Handgun Control Inc. members voted for Bush?
Million Mom Marchers voted for Bush?
Black Panthers voted for Bush?

Or are you saying that only RIGHT wing people are "EXTREMIST" groups -- LEFT wing people organize into "ACTION COALITIONS," right? :S

Really, though, how the fuck do you know what American Nazi Party members did at the polls?

The GOP uses hatred and fear far more effectively, don't you think?

Even though they haven't fielded a Presidental candidate since 1964, they still are a legitimate political party in the U.S. It isn't too hard to do research on them.

It sucks that political parties like them exist (there are at least two other nazi/KKK type parties out there), but they do.

It sucks there are people out there like that

The fact that a racially prejudiced bigot like Bond attracts a following here in the U.S. is a testament to the failure of the American education system. The fact that he leads the NAACP shows just how irrelevant that organization has become to anyone with a three digit IQ.

Have they ever campained saying the other party wants to starve kids, take away old peoples houses and medical, destroy the enviornment, and on and on and on.

The left only condems the other side. I wish they would offer alternatives so a real debate could begin[:/]

OTOH the Liberals on the SCOTUS have passed a law which does this exactly.

Quite right, and I think the impact of their ruling is bad, however they did advise the states to pass laws to limit the scope of eminent domain. I think this is a case where the liberals actually did not make their ruling based on what is fair, but on how they interpret the law, and recommended to the states that they improve the fairness of the law.

By "passed a law", you mean "interpreted a law to mean what it says", don't you?

And he wonders why Bush won't meet with the NAACP.

Too true.... Mr Bush.. does not like to hear anything that does not jibe with his world view.

You know, Jeanne, I think it's best for us to call out everyone who speaks this sort of vitriolic tripe. What Bond said is no better than the shit that Pat Robertson has been spewing. Both have political power, and people tend to look at both as spokesmen who reflect the views of their respective groups. I don't care who says something wrong, I will call it out. Yes, even myself, and I have many times.

You wouldn't accept this from anyone on the right. Neither would I. I dont' accept it from anyone on the left, either. Neither should you or anybody else. David Duke would say things like that. Tom Metzger would say things like that.

Julian Bond is the head of the NAACP, for goodness sake. He is no better now than Khalid Abdul Muhhamed. Unfortunately, he's been the head of the NAACP since 1998, when Mfume stepped down, and I see nothing pending to cause his sacking. I have more respect fro Jesse Jackson now. At least he does SOME good.

I have lost all present respect for the NAACP. Until they start working towards the "advancement of colored people" and stop working towards the "ebb of all who are politically opposed" I will take a stand against the group. The hatred the group is spewing far outweighs any good they do.

Jeanne? Can you honestly say that what Bond said is accurate? Can you honestly say that it advances the cause of the NAACP? Because the only cause he is advancing is hatred, animosity, and divisiveness.

If you think that what he said was accurate, correct or even okay, then you are what you despise. Only with a contrary viewpoint.[:/]

Actually, you are partially correct. Their warped sense of the law led them to misinterpet a law which has had a more negative effect on people's constitutional rights than any post 9/11 actions including the Patriot Act.
