GWB State of the Union Speech #6: Your Opinions Please

Recommended Posts

I managed to listen for about 10 minutes, but I got tired of the endless interruptions to clap for the cameras. Then I saw 2 hours was scheduled and decided I'd wait for a transcript instead.

Not sure why, but everytime Bush refers to some common man, it sounds like the most gratiutous name dropping, and rather insincere.

Nice turn around in direction - from someone who wanted to drill Alaska and boycotted Kyoto, it's refreshing to hear him say the US must end it's reliance on oil.

Quite how he aims to cut demand by 75% bu 2025 is anyone's guess, but it's an interesting turnabout in events, that's for sure.

The Speech rocked.

I liked every thing he said. I think he handled the Iran thing in exactly the way it needed to be handled.

I know lots of people in Iran were listening to his speech on their SW radios as they always do.

Maybe I am naïve or gullible but it made me want to give President Bush another chance. If he and congress were able to get most of the things done that he is specking of it would be a great thing.

I like to listen to the responses from the DNC congressmen.

I heard a lot of "I like what he said about {subject) but I'm interested in how HE is going to make that happen."

I'd like to hear more "I liked a couple things and WE have to find ways to enable those".

And then frank and honest input on what is disagreed upon rather than the same rhetoric.

Instead of just rote opposition and slams, no vision can be realized unless the congress stops being obstructive/antagonistic and, instead, they roll up their sleeves and at least start to work on those things they do agree on. It's really childish right now and not getting better. I don't see it getting better either since we're in a buildup to the next election cycle.

Other than followon interviews, I'm waiting to see the transcript and didn't bother to hear the speech, I can't stand the clapping bits. I doubt the transcript will be much of an eye opener either, but I have a long flight in front of me. But from what I heard, other than a stronger emphasis on energy dependence and nuclear power specifically, it was more of the same stuff.

Yes, and it's a valid point when considered in the context of his previous SOTUs. How much tax reform and SocSec reform have you noticed since they were his stated priorities (2005 SOTU)? Have you noticed how he got Iran to give up its nuclear program, which also was in the 2005 SOTU?

Long on rhetoric, short on detail, I cannot suspend disbelief enough to even clap with one hand.

It's not a valid point when talking about the DNC senators - as I'm talking about them, not the POTUS. They can choose to support initiatives they agree with and not worry about where it originated. Instead, even when they agree, they still find a way to put a dig out. It's childish.

I'm only talking about those visions that these DNC senators AGREE with. If they agree with them, why don't they even just PRETEND to be willing to also take ownership.

As far as tax reform and SS, I understand that when he admitted the SS reform was torpedoed and he couldn't make progress, that the DNC stood up and clapped - celebrating in a tacky form. So you want to blame the failure of the SS initiative solely on one man?

Both sides need to grow up. If you can admit that without any qualifications just to make a partisan slam, then your political views would be worth talking about. If not, how can I take you seriously?

The SOTU has to be taken in context. The context is Bush's previous SOTUs. Why would ANYONE, including DNC senators, you, or me, take anything he says seriously any more when his track record is so abysmal on (a) truth, and (b) follow-through?

Actually, it was his 5th

I originally had 5th up and later edited it for 6. Counting from and including January 2001, it's 6, no?
PS I liked governor Kaine's response emphasizing *results* via bipartisanship, I thought it was refreshing to hear something substantive, and from a Washington outsider at that.

AND the political actions of both the legislative and executive branch in the following years. I keep forgetting you think this is a monarchy.

Edit: But your response has nothing to do with the Senator's attitudes and remarks in terms of how they support those initiative and visions which they AGREE with. You are not responding to me, just making your own speeches. If so, please don't quote me and pretend it has anything to do with what you are talking about.

The DNC response was a response, not a party platform. I thought it was fine.

Tim Kaine is our new Governor, following on the heels of conservative Democrat Mark Warner, but I don't think he's ready for National Politics yet. I do find it interesting that he was chosen to respond, given he doesn't represent the far left of center slant of the National Democratic Party. He's conservative, Christian and anti-abortion. My guess is the Democrats are learning the only way they will be competitive is to shut up.

Because it appears as if dissenting opionions are not allowed.

It really doesn't matter to me what Sheehan's impact may or may not have been, but she had ever right to be there and had every right to wear something that indicated her views.

You do know that a Florida Congressmans wife was also removed for wearing a " Support the Troops Defending Our Freedom" T-Shirt, don't you? Another attempted bash, torpedoed.........................

Regardless of what she said after the fact, the t-shirt could be read a couple of ways and I am -certain- that the abiguity is what caused the issue.

Or perhaps you're not aware that some people DO NOT believe the President HAS supported our troops because he sent them in without the proper strength and armor on a mission doomed to failure and for all the wrong reasons.

I thought the speech was pretty good. He addressed most of the issues that we bitch an moan about here in SC. He also took a few nice shots at those who oppose just about everything.

Sure they're allowed, but there's a time and a place. The SOTU is the president's turn to talk, not a place for a protest. Sometimes I think that those who bitch most about free speech feel like that free speech only applies to them and all others should be shouted down. They probably didn't want to have any confrontation in the gallery, so they took preventative action. Or maybe there was a dress code since the "Support Our Troops" shirt had to leave too. Yeah, you'll say I'm making excuses, but there is a time and place for people to rant and rave... and the SOTU isn't it. People have lost their sense of decorum, and would probably be taken more seriously if they hadn't.
Oh, hello again!

You expected logic? He is just trying to position his party so they don't lose the election this year. The rhetoric and talking points (sans substanance) has already started. They are betting on the typical short term memory this country seems to have in relation to politics.

Make promises that extend beyond his 4 years in office - this way no one can hold him accountable when the next administration makes changes (much like he did for air polution, etc).

Outside of that - it was nothing new. I've heard every bit of stutter based comments across the last 5 years. Politics has become cut and paste and most of this country will buy it since they rely upon the news nets to form their opinion.
