To MY way of thinking NOBODY from the USA should be getting injured, blown up or killed in that part of the world..WHY???? because we DON'T BELONG THERE!!!!!!!!!!.
Sad as all this news is....... why does the Media think that we need to to have "instantaneous reporting" of this war action...
I never understood the reason for Journalists being ON the field of battle....Give me a break.....
Are these guys so ambitious and unwilling to say no to such an assignment, that they willingly accept them and off they go to some hostile, desolate, dangerous place..... Why isn't that little "danger light " going off in their heads????...What about their families?? what about their Kids???

When the white dude working in middle management is gunned down in front of his home it will make bigger news than the homie in the hood who gets murdered in front of his home because: 1) we tend to identify with the suburban white dude more; and 2) who is surprised or shocked that a guy is shot in the hood? It's so common as to be un-newsworthy, I'm afraid.
Is it sad? Yes. But in reality, it's the way it goes. I'd like there to be a weekly TV program that does biographies of those who were killed on duty. I think it would be quite a program. One that I would probably have a hard time watching.

In my opinion the news uses the 10 sec blurb (on soldiers) only for the numbers. They want the vietnam era back where they can just post pieces of the story and turn public opinion. I think they thought when 1000 or 2000 was the number reached they could meet thier goal They can't move forward from there.

As more information is coming out and more people are starting to speak up it is becoming evident, to me anyway, that SH was up to his ears being involved with the terrorists. I'm not a big fan of mainstream newsmedia, but give credit where it's due. It's a business. It exists because of its customers. If the majority of people could deal with more than 10 secs blurbs, it would adapt and provide such pieces. Joe blow testing HIV positive doesn't mean shit to most people. Magic Johnson doing so hits close to "home", therefore becomes "relevant". And maybe there's some good in it if it allows some to realize what's happening out there. Best thing people can do about it is to stop watching/listening to/reading diluted news report and demand more. But it's unlikely it will happen. That's why there's always the option of watching reruns of Ali G late at night.

Most weeks NPR does a profile of a soldier who died in Iraq. Talks with school friends, family, what he was like, how he (or she) died, and how the family is dealing with it.
It's very moving. But you have to listen to NPR to hear it.

As for a journalist getting more notice when injured or killed, Law Rocket said it very well. Also, a journalist does not have to be there. They choose to be, only because they feel a need to tell the story to the world. It has been this way from the very first war. Without them, how can we learn from the past (evidently, we have not learned much). The soldier has no choice. I do not believe that their injuries or deaths have gone unnoted. I see the faces and names everyday on the evening news. Sadly it has just become a regular feature much like the weather report.
