Nightingale 0 #8 January 31, 2006 Private education does not necessarily equal quality education. In many situations, it can be exactly the opposite. It's unfortunate that people tend to equate the quality of the school with how much money they spend on it, or its church affiliation, neither of which is a good indicator. There are great catholic schools. There are terrible catholic schools. Some are better than the local public schools, some are not.

Sounds like she asked a pretty decent question, assuming she didn't know the context. My dictionary here says that "Ga" and "GA" are acceptable abbreviations for "Georgia," but I think it is conventional for abbreviations to give a capital letter to each word abbreviated. Thus "Ga" should not be mistaken for "Gamblers Anonymous," "General Aviation," etc. Now, what I want to know is, how did we ever get "Lb." for "pound"?! Or "Bbl" for "barrel"? --Jeffrey "With tha thoughts of a militant mind... Hard line, hard line after hard line!"

Erroll 80 #11 January 31, 2006 QuoteNow, what I want to know is, how did we ever get "Lb." for "pound"?! Or "Bbl" for "barrel"? - The abbreviation "lb" for a unit of weight is derived from the Latin word libra. I found this about Bbl: QuoteThe US oil industry uses the abbreviation of bbl for barrel without knowing what it means. After a long search I found that the term means blue barrel and there are two explanations for the blue color: one, it was the color of crude oil barrels in a refinery when the red barrels were of refined product; second it was the color of the Standard Oil which was ruling the industry at the time. peacefuljeffrey 0 #12 January 31, 2006 Maybe "blue barrel" came from gun bluing. Before GLOCK came along with Tenifer coating (and all the other modern coatings that have arrived), gun rifles and slides were often "blued." Dunno. --Jeffrey "With tha thoughts of a militant mind... ViperPilot 0 #14 January 31, 2006 I think part of it is kids just don't care as much anymore. Maybe work ethic has been replaced w/ TV like skating w/ celebrities...YGBSM! Part of that is the family's fault for not properly motivating their kids to do better and put more effort in, but at the same point, some people are just idiots and don't care...oh well, the world needs ditch diggers too. FallinWoman 1 #20 February 1, 2006 One of my pet peeves...people blaming the schools only.... As a high school teacher (public) I see kids go through my school of 2000 students who get a great education. I also see kids go though and get a crappy education. What is the difference? Most of the time it comes down to parental involvement. I have seen white kids from families that make loads of money. I have seen black kids from the city who are supported by one parent who works two jobs but ALSO holds the kid responsible for homework and grades. Which kid does better? The kid with the involved parent. Don't blame me. I teach over 100 kids a semester. How can I possibly personally save them all? When I was a new teacher I tried and almost burned myself out. How do I compete with a parent who doesn't know how to get Johnny to do his homework because he is on the cell phone all night? Or what about Jenny who is IMing people all night and Mom and Dad don't know what to do? Raising a successful child starts in the home. It starts with clear expectations and values. I cannot combat a lifetime of apathy in 225 minutes a week. ~Anne I'm a Doll!!!!
