The government that claims this is to be "fair." Actually, racial quotas have been illegal in the US since 1978. Tell that to college admissions boards. And tell that to places like Palm Beach County, which spends money and time to come up with "programs" whose goal is to "get more black kids into college." Why not just "get more KIDS into college"? If a kid doesn't want to go to college, and he's white, no one gives a shit. But if he's black, everyone's like, "What can we do to kiss his ass into a college classroom?" If he fuckin' doesn't want to go on his own, why should other people take on the responsibility for wanting him to go to college? And why is it okay that they drop any interest in having white kids go on to college. I'm sure there are parts of the country where even white college enrollment is low. Is there a racially-motivated drive to push up their college enrollments? --Jeffrey "With tha thoughts of a militant mind... Hard line, hard line after hard line!" Just to set the record straight, yes Subaru were dominating the WRC years ago, but that’s history and the Impreza has become a little outdated. It’s 8 years since they won the Manufacturers Championship. If any company should be called the “dominator” in rally right now it’s Citroen. As a little bonus fact of the day: There is actually a ford driver (Grönholm) leading the 2006 championships. nerd137 0 #31 January 30, 2006 Affirmative action programs aren't illegal; it's only the use of quotas in such programs that's illegal. You may not agree that affirmative action is a good approach to resolving racial disparaties in this country; that's fine. But neither do you show a good understanding of (a) how such programs work, or (b) why there are used in the first place. You might try and educate yourself a little more before forming such strong opinions.
rehmwa 2 #32 January 30, 2006 QuoteAffirmative action programs aren't illegal; it's only the use of quotas in such programs that's illegal. Dead on. A good AA program will ensure that the ability to find good candidates is made across all demographics. Then we are supposed to hire the best candidate in a color-blind decision process. But... (there's always the 'but') many companies rate the effectiveness of their AA program by looking at representation metrics, many people advocate this to also be the rules - x% must be this color, y% must be this gender, etc. I think that sends the wrong message and is exactly a 'quota' mentality - despite the legality of it. I think better metrics would be representation within interviews, the variety of tools and resources used to find candidates. And stop with that. Further, leaving advertisement up to the responsibility of the company to reach a broad audience is also a very stereotyping activity (Bob - we're short on black women, better put on ads in "{some magazine catering to that market}". Good candidates should be willing to look for jobs regardless of how a company advertises. I bet you could call any Fortune 500 company and ask them where they advertise job opportunities and they'd tell you. Then it doesn't matter if the 'magazine' or newpaper caters in a racist way. Anyone can go find that. ... Driving is a one dimensional activity - a monkey can do it - being proud of your driving abilities is like being proud of being able to put on pants
