rasmack 0 #2 January 19, 2006 No no, it is the other way round. You shelter the masses from having to know anything about... (checks profile) geochemistry. They can rest assured that someone somewhere know something about this. Seriously though, it seems that many people think that research is not a "real job". Thay are probably just jealous that you can get away with doing what you think is interesting. You are thus (in their view) "sheltered" from having to find a "real" job.HF #682, Team Dirty Sanchez #227 “I simply hate, detest, loathe, despise, and abhor redundancy.” - Not quite Oscar Wilde... I live to serve: http://www.com.washington.edu/Program/publicscholarship/ps_sprain.pdf Webster’s Dictionary defines “ivory tower” in a negative light as “an impractical often escapist attitude marked by aloof lack of concern with or interest in practical matters or urgent problems,” a “secluded place that affords the means of treating practical issues with an impractical often escapist attitude; especially: a place of learning.” I really don't think this applies to you, Steven. rlIf you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. wmw999 2,589 #4 January 19, 2006 You're sheltered to a small degree from closed minds. Not completely, but I'll bet there are more open minds going to college than working at the local car dealership. And, for all that people say that intelligence and education are overrated, you probably spend more time around intelligent and/or educated people than most. Of course, if you're faculty, you have much more brutal politics to play than most. What -- they didn't tell you about not having to pay the bills yet? Man!
