CNN poll right now: "Will the congressional focus on ethics lead to meaningful reform?

she just likes to use bad examples from the right wing because that's her axe.

YEs and the axe gets sharper every year as we have more and more and more examples of a coutry that is treading on very thin totalitarian ice. Even Tommy Franks acknowledges we are VERY close to having a country ruled by Martial Law. It seems the Right is leading towards this. I wonder when the rest of the country will get tired of this and will it be in time to keep the country our founding fathers set up for us.>:(

The right may be leaning toward it, but the left is trying hard to make it feasible by insisting that the government should have a monopoly on the ability to use force.

Keep pushing gun control, and our society will be prime prey for totalitarianism.

History makes this quite clear.

There areseveral people on this site who have a uni-subject worldview..... one subject that forces them into the far right camp and anti-gun control. I used to be a staunch supporter of the NRA until they went to the right of Genghis Khan on all their candidates they support. I own guns.. I use them for hunting and just having fun shooting.. and I have yet to feel threatend by any gun control measures. There needs to be some severe sanity checks in this country when it comes to aquiring guns..nutjobs and criminals and who is using them illegally. Personally I think background checks and waiting periods are good things..... and prudent.. but quite a few of those on the right will not even support those kinds of measures.... that my friend.. is whacked.

There are FAR more problems with the Neo-Facisists.. how long do you REALLLLY think gun's will be allowed by the citizenry after we begin to live under a military dictatorship?

Ironic, when you consider that the current erosion of fourth amendment rights is by far the biggest threat to gun owners. Why worry about waiting periods (or even gun registration) when the government can tap your phone, check your email and see where you buy your ammo - all without a warrant?

First, they came for the "assault-weaponists," and since I was not an "assault-weaponist," I said nothing.

Then, they came for the "high-capacity pistoleros," and since I was not "high-capacity pistolero," I said nothing.

Then, they came for the "50BMGers," and since I was not a "50BMGer," I said nothing.

Then, they came for the "sniper-riflemen," and since I was not a "sniper-rifleman," I said nothing.

Then they came for the "hunters," "plinkers," and "single-shot-22ists," and.. and ...
well, I'm a hunter, plinker, and single-shot 22ist, and there's no one to speak for me! [:/]

Is that what you want it to come to? You don't appear to view us ALL as gun owners. You don't see a threat to your hunting rifle and your .22 (yet) because they're not going to start trying to ban the least-benign-seeming firearms first. They'll go after those once they've banned the ones they can surround with controversy.

I deplore the kind of self-centeredness that says, "I won't stand up with my brethren unless my own interests are threatened." If you can't see that the anti-gun people who want you to have NO guns are trying to divide us in order to conquer us, you are blind.

I can't think of too many people who have a problem with the instant check system/requirement -- it's government keeping a list of who has what that we object to. Don't mischaracterize our argument as though we are against making sure violent people and crazies and druggies don't get guns.

We can start by making sure that NO ONE who is ever convicted of criminally taking the life of another person ever sees the outside of a prison for as long as they live. And we can move on to "truth-in-sentencing" requirements that would make sure "life in prison" MEANS "life in prison," and 25 years does not mean "8 years if you act nice and play well with others."

You get to a military dictatorship that much faster by prohibiting guns in the first place.

Why would where I buy my ammo be a threat unless the gun/ammo was banned? I don't see where you're going with that.

Presumably, if all I'm doing is legally owning some guns and ammo, and not committing any other criminal acts that they would discover by tapping my phone or checking my email, I would not stand to lose anything (except privacy).

Funny how invasions of privacy under the Patriot Act were always there, and were voted FOR by all but one democratic congressperson (Pelosi?) -- and now they're all telling us how evil the thing was.

Okay, senator/congressman -- if it's so evil, why'd you vote for it?
You get to choose one of only two answers, because they are the only ones that could possibly apply:

- I never read the thing, but voted for it; in which case I am negligent and malfeasant in my duties as an elected representative and legislator

- I voted for it for political expediency, because I value getting re-elected, for which I have to be viewed as doing what the people want, even when it is ill-conceived and misguided.

I'm more worried about the Liberals on the SCOTUS passing laws that allow the govt. to take my home and give it to someone who wants to build a shopping mall. Hopefully with Roberts and Alito we can stop this idiocy.

That truly is one ugly fucking precedent they've now set. B|

To add insult to injury, if you fight the seizure in court and lose, and the fight took three years, they'll be entitled to charge you three years' back rent!! >:( :S

Thank a liberal.

It wasn't the court's conservatives that wrote the (barely) majority opinion on that one. >:(

Ah, the usual Speaker's Corner response. "Our side wins because the other side sucks MORE!" Rather than play, I will leave you to your rhetoric.

This is about congressional ethics and GM's comment applies to both "sides" (I don't think there REALLY is sides, they are all cut from the same herd). I didn't read that other than about another issue of lack of ethics. The partisan tangent actually started on the other "side". It started to show it's head on Post 14 and got blatant on Post 26.

I was just responding to the usual "the Bush Admin. is out to take your rights away under the guise of protecting you." banter. Can't say I blame you for not wanting to play.

I cannot for the life of me believe that 1st that the government has a clue what ethics are let alone have a day to discuss them. 2 that congress has the desire to do anything that is beneficial to human beings on this planet. 3 are even capable of caring what happens to any of us. I think congress is a flippen puppet show!
I've learned.... That being kind is more important than being
right.
