Sen. Clinton Plays The Race Card For Personal Political Gain

Recommended Posts

What a buffoon, who trivializes the legacy of slavery for selfish reasons.

Sen. Clinton: House 'has been run like a plantation'

NEW YORK (AP) -- Sen. Hillary Clinton on Monday blasted the Bush administration as "one of the worst" in U.S. history and compared the Republican-controlled House of Representatives to a plantation where dissenting voices are squelched.

Speaking during a Martin Luther King Jr. Day event, Clinton also offered an apology to a group of Hurricane Katrina survivors "on behalf of a government that left you behind, that turned its back on you." Her remarks were met with thunderous applause by a mostly black audience at the Canaan Baptist Church of Christ in Harlem.

The House "has been run like a plantation, and you know what I'm talking about," said Clinton, D-New York. "It has been run in a way so that nobody with a contrary view has had a chance to present legislation, to make an argument, to be heard."

"We have a culture of corruption, we have cronyism, we have incompetence," she said. "I predict to you that this administration will go down in history as one of the worst that has ever governed our country."

A spokeswoman for the White House declined to comment and referred questions to the Republican National Committee.

RNC spokeswoman Tracey Schmitt said: "On a day when Americans are focused on the legacy of Martin Luther King, Hillary Clinton is focused on the legacy of Hillary Clinton."

The House "has been run like a plantation, and you know what I'm talking about," said Clinton, D-New York.

I don’t disagree with the substance of her claims regarding the Republicans. But for her to link the current political climate to the genuine evil that was slavery in the South is both morally irresponsible and reprehensible. Playing the race card to underscore a political message in this fashion disgusts me and it should have been interpreted as an insult by her audience.

What a pathetic portent of future political discourse in this country.

I do not disagree with any of the above. Neither do I disagree that she said it for personal gain.

While I agree with her basic sentiment about the current state of affairs, I also agree with you that playing the race card was over the top. Regardless though, I don't see this as a portent of future political discourse, but rather a perfect example of how low we've already let our politicians stoop.

Future? Are you serious?

According to Sen. Clinton there is no political discourse in this country at the present time. Hence "future."

She may have meant that, but I don't think you did when you wrote it.:ph34r:

But nice recovery. :)

I don't disagree with this, Senator. But ironically, I do find there to be less toeing of the line from the Repubs than fromt he Dems.

What is most interesting is how she claims that voices of dissent are being squelched, which is published. Secondly, she offers no examples of this.

The worst is that she treats this like slavery. When will she and her ilk figure out that it doesn't make bush look that bad. Rather, it makes slavery look "not that bad."

I disagree. I think almost all of them look that bad these days. It might just be because I'm getting older, but it seems to me that politicians in general (on both sides of the aisle) are getting ridicously bad in recent years. And we're letting them.

Playing the race card. If she speaks publicly about an issue that is important to her, why is it playing the "race card?" If a person is a proponent of Women's issues and speak about that, then are they playing the "gender card?" What about religious issues....or gay rights? Playing the "queer card?"

I don't like Hillary, and I don't agree with what she has to say in this instance. But the issue is a legitimate one, imho.

Why is it playing the race card? Because it is. The point of this thread was not the issues about Congress she raised, but the method she used to get there.

That she made an analogy to race simply because she was speaking to a group of black people. That is playing the race card.

Would she have made that same comparison in front of a School PTA? Small Business owners?

It would be equivalent if she went to a jewish group and said the Democrats were like the Jews in Egypt or the Holocaust. Or if she went to a Christian group and said it was like being crucified (the analogy is poorer there).

And that is playing the card and is simply a tacky and pathetic way to get your point across.

Agreed, although she actually played the "plantation" card. Which has been used quite frequently, lately. Whatever connotation the audience wants to take from it is their business.

Since my vocabulary is small, I thought, for a long time, that this was all about miniature bananas. But that's not 'plantations' I find out.

what puzzles me is who she's trying to convince. Black approval of
the current admin is already in the single digits. To take a risk in
strong rethoric such as this one just to sway some of the
remaining 7-10% doesn't seem to add up.

So if she were to speak about Women's issues at a NOW meeting, would that also be pathetic? Or would it be pathetic if she reminded women that it wasn't that long ago that we weren't allowed to vote....or of a time when we "belonged" to our husbands?

What about if a person speaks at the VA about Veterans' loss of medical benefits as a result of a previous administration's policies. Is that playing some card or another???

Whenever politicians speak to any group, it's for political gain. Otherwise they wouldn't be there.

She made the comparison between the "Strife" in congress to slavery on a plantation. Do you honestly think that is a valid analogy? I don't. There is no connection to begin with and the problems in Congress are CERTAINLY not comparable to the lack of power slaves held on a plantation. The sheer maginitude of one outweights the other. The statement simply pandered to the crowd and that was all.

The woman's group. If she made the connection between Woman's Rights and problems in Congress, then yes, that would be playing a card. And would be quite the hyperbole just to appeal to the crowd.

As for your VA example, there is no corollary. Giving an example of how past action caused the present is fine. But as I said, slavery has NOTHING to do with the current shite state of Congress. The comparison is patently absurd.

The clever speaker will find a way to relate to an audience without having to delve into making outrageous connections between unrelated events just to get a cheer.

So the only clear message we take from this is Hillary's incredibly low opinion of black people, in general. She will do more to hurt herself by arrogantly and callously stereotyping her audiences time and again.

Nope. But let's get into similarities, "This administration is one of the worst in American history." She apologized to a group of women at a domestic violence shelter, "on behalf of a government that left you behind, that turned its back on you."

The House "has been run like a wife-beater's house, and you know what I'm talking about," said Clinton, D-New York. "It has been run in a way so that anybody with a contrary view is beaten down - we have had no chance to present legislation, to make an argument, to be heard. "

"We have a culture of corruption, we have cronyism, we have chauvenism," she said. "I predict to you that this administration will go down in history as one of the worst group of rapists that has ever governed our country."

I would say so. Inherently, that would be saying, "This administration wants to take away your voice, your right to vote, and return you to the status of a man's chattle, barefoot and pregnant." I think it'd be pathetic.

Not necessarily. That sounds a lot more like talking to someone that pulling up invective.

Had senator gone to Pearl Harbor Day event and compared the present administration to Japanese Death Camp Officers to WWII Veterans, "This administration is one of the worst in American history" and then apologized to a group amputees "on behalf of a government that left you behind, that turned its back on you."

"The House has been run like a the Bataan Death March, and you know what I'm talking about," said the senator. "It has been run in a way so that nobody with a contrary view has had a chance to present legislation, to make an argument, to be heard."

Or why not give a talk to the Simon Wiesenthal Center? "This administration is one of the worst in American history" and then apologize to a group of hate-crime victoms "on behalf of a government that left you behind, that turned its back on you."

"The House has been run like Treblinka and Auchwitz, and you know what I'm talking about," said the senator. "It has been run in a way so that nobody with a contrary view has had a chance to present legislation, to make an argument, to be heard."

I guess I could go on...
