It's Black Guy Day!

Recommended Posts

Stupid, worthless, useless "holiday" imposed under duress by spineless politicians afraid of being smeared as "racists" if they didn't comply with the dictates of the "civil rights" plantation massas.

The ironic thing is that, when these same politicians attempt to support policies which are in agreement with the basic philosophy of Dr. King, they are again smeared as bigots. The easiect way to be called a "racist" in America is to treat black people just like everybody else.

Marty may deserve our respect, but why is he the only American considered worthy of a holiday in his name?

Damn, at times like this I really wish I had a job so I could refuse the day off and go in and work.

Cheers,
Jon S.

MLK deserves a day in his honor. It is sad, though, that his message is all but lost on todays black leaders (the Jackson/Farrakhan crowd that is). They hold him up as some kind of god, and yet ignore much of what he espoused in order to further their own agendas.

Santa is white too, so were the pilgrims, and the easter bunny (except the chocolate ones)
So was Washington - luckily I get his day off too. We should get St Patrick's day off too. I'm not really sure what he did, but I'm sure he was a great man.

Interesting observations. Thought provoking.

BTW, I'm not sure but I think both Geo. Washington and Abe Lincoln's birthdays were US holidays before they combined them into 'Presidents Day'.

They were, and in Texas the state celebrates with holidays (or at least did when I worked for them) San Jacinto day, and Lyndon Johnson's birthday.

I would be unlikely ever to object to a holiday.

Black guy day?!:S Just got thru reading a bunch of Martin Luther King quotes, and none of them were about "black guys".

They were some, however, about the obligation for ALL people to stand up for justice, and some about how America should live up to its stated ideals.

no mention of "black guys" though.

I think you're missing the point - he's BLACK. And you should judge people on what they look like, not what they say or what they do. I mean, you start judging people on what they do, and suddenly Stephen Hawking might start getting more attention than Britney Spears - and we can't have that!

I agree there! And have all bars stay open till 4am nationwide to celebrate.

My high school was St. Pats. We got that day off, and we had the option to march in the Chicago St. Patty's Day parade.
Illinois needs a CCW Law. NOW.

That's OK; he was white. And of course Christmas is OK too. Jesus wasn't exactly white, but he is near and dear to the hearts of many, so that's OK.

Dude.. he was a Jew.... WTF.. can we have a holiday for Jews???:P

There are; Yom Kippur, Roshana, ect. I grew up in NY and got those days off from school. I moved to the south and started working of the federal gov't and lost those days off. It was a real culture shock. When you talk to people around here about knowing Jews you might as well be talking about Martians

Dr. King - like anyone else - had his good and bad points. I think the reason this day is named after him was because of one of his good points - courage to stand up to a system of embedded racism and bigotry. I don't really think the intent of this day should be solely to focus on civil rights, but on the contribution that courage and individuality have made to American society.

I really admire Dr. King in many respects - and detest him in others. I think the U.S. today would be a much worse and sorrier place had he not accomplished what he did in the civil rights movement.

You are somewhat correct in stating that politicians feared being smeared as racists played a role in creating this holiday and that when politicians or anyone else supports policies that are in agreement with what Dr. King preached, they may be assured of being maligned as racists by the current civil rights leaders[sic].

The current 'leaders' of the civil rights movement in America - $harpton, Je$$e Jack$on, Farrakhan - are a disgrace to Dr. King's legacy.

I like the holiday and support it.

Bill, you're not a civil rights leader per se, but in a large way you just made one of Airman's points for him with this witty riposte by implying that the only reason he's against the holiday is because of Dr. King's color. Nice job - would you like to make a donation to Ward Connerly's ACRI while you're at it?

:D

Columbus Day, for the information of all, celebrates the discovery of the Americas.

MLK day is kind of a joke, since it's basically a government/financial holiday. I doubt if very many folks relaxing today are thinking about MLK.;)

I used to have fun with people, though, when they would ask me what I did for the holiday. I'd say, quite seriously, "I was celebrating Dr. King's legacy."

They'd get a little uncomfortable till I said "Nah, I went to [insert random 3-day weekend destination here]."

That said, there's a radio station in Seattle (that normally plays just music and is about as apolitical as they get) that will play the *entire* "I Have a Dream" speech on MLK day. It's powerful stuff and few people get to hear it all the way through. A few years ago I sat in a Safeway parking lot for 20 minutes so I could hear the end.
