Will Bush ignore torture ban?

But John Rich loves guns, and kallend doesn't seem to love bush so much... (well, not that kind of Bush anyway).

You got your capital letters reversed. I like bush, not Bush.

True...

Hey, lately Bush has been the man I "love to hate" too . . . ;)

So, why do you think he left himself an out to ignore the anti-torture law unless he intends to use torture?

Yeah, my writing skills are not so great... I had to think for a while about which bush should be capitalized to make my point, but I guess I chose the wrong one. :$

In the "national interest", of course, which I don't see as a completely meritless argument (although I don't like it much either).

He's apparently given himself the authority to torture if he feels like it.

Of course he will. He gave himself the authority before and even if there is a law against it, he will hold that as an option for the future.

I can't say I -wouldn't- hold it open as an option, but I definately would be MUCH smarter and selective about it so that it had much less chance of being used against the U.S.

Make no mistake. The U.S. has tortured in the past and will continue to do so in select circumstances no matter what the U.S. or International law says.

It's simply foolish to do it on the -scale- that we've been doing it in the last few years. In general it doesn't work anyway, but I can see some -specific- instances where it might be useful and even justified. But this whole scale "secret" interrogation camp thing is simply stupid. We live in a world where a private citizen (forget foreign government) has access to 1 meter resolution remote imaging. The is simply NO WAY to hide that type of operation indefinately. It was simply too big.

His administration will. Specifically, Rumsfeld and company will continue to pursue loopholes in laws that allow torture, and will suggest that it should be used in certain cases. And the righties will claim "no they won't" until he actually does it, at which point they will use the "ticking atomic bomb" argument again.

But Bush? I honestly think he doesn't know what's going on sometimes in his administration. Cheney and Rumsfeld are much of the impetus behind the torture policy.

I think it is unrealistic to expect it to not happen in a war. I do however think it should be used sparingly and only with certain high value enemy personell. Randomly doing it will turn civilian populations against you and is counterproductive.
