peacefuljeffrey 0 #4 January 4, 2006 Isn't he known as kind of a libertarian or something? He's the fly in the ointment of the bullshit-spewers on network news and other major media. He tells the fuckin' TRUTH. I think I've seen articles by him, or at least mentioning him, in Reason magazine; if I'm not mistaken, that's why I think he is associated with libertarianism. rushmc 23 #6 January 4, 2006 Thanks, Somehow I had missed his self proclomations but dam I agree with him! I wonder why the heck the libertarian party can't take off?............Crap, I know the answer to that but, with a new "underground" media emerging and more and more people gravitating to it, maybe some day"America will never be destroyed from the outside, if we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves." RhondaLea 4 #7 January 4, 2006 QuoteI love John Stossel. His book Give Me a Break is an eye opener about a lot of things. He's wise beyond his years. He's made some major missteps in becoming "wise beyond his years." I never liked him. And there's one thing in particular that he did many years ago--I can see short clips of the news reports in my head, but I can't remember the topic...whatever it was, he sucked. As for colds...cold does not cause a cold, but becoming chilled weakens one's immune system, making one more susceptible to cold germs. Also, I really loved the one about how money doesn't buy happiness. There are many more people in this world with incomes below $30k (much less $50k) than there are above. How friggin' elitist can you get? I don't have time for every criticism I'm inclined to make, but I think he's mostly full of shit. rlIf you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. I never know when to take you seriously. Everything you write makes me laugh anymore, even when you're not kidding--it's a Pavlovian reaction by now. Should I answer this straight or funny? The straight answer is, based on the premises set forth in item #9, money can buy happiness for the better part of the world's population. But I still feel like I'm missing some really subtle irony here. rlIf you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. GTAVercetti 0 #10 January 4, 2006 I was being serious. And have no fear. many people are not sure if I am joking or serious. The way i read it, it was not just some random idea, but a survey done. And those under 30K in that survey were happier when they made more. To me, this does not exclude the notion that they were in fact HAPPY under 30K, but only that a little more spending money helped. And that is the way I feel about it. No amount can ever turn a totally unhappy life around, but sometimes a little extra cash can make a good life better. Speaking as one who was a single mother with a brand new baby, taking home $181/week in 1984, and speaking as one who chose to give up a good-paying job for the opportunity to live and work on a dropzone for $7/hour in 1999, and also speaking as one who was mostly unemployed from May 2002 until February 2005, I would say that although there is happiness to be had in poverty, it is more likely when one's poverty is an election, because it comes with a choice to not be poor. When there is no choice, it is so stressful, that even the joyful moments come with a nagging feeling of unease. QuoteAnd that is the way I feel about it. No amount can ever turn a totally unhappy life around, but sometimes a little extra cash can make a good life better. Early in my daughter's life, and during that period of unemployment, my life was more unhappy than you can possibly imagine, and even at that, I was lucky enough to have several fallback positions. I was never hungry, but there were a lot of times when I was very scared. QuoteIn anycase, I would still like a million dollars. In pennies. For swimming. Like Scrooge McDuck. If I ever win the lottery, you can count on a duck suit and a swimming pool filled with pennies, however many pennies it takes. rlIf you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. GTAVercetti 0 #14 January 4, 2006 Your comments really kinda feeds back into my original comment. I have no idea what you meant. If you are saying that you were unhappy being poverty stricken, then how is the idea that more money for those under 30K elitist? What you just wrote SUPPORTS the idea that poor people are unhappy. I think I am just misconstruing what you are refering to as elitist. And if you get the duck suit, I will go aswimmin'.Why yes, my license number is a palindrome. Thank you for noticing. RhondaLea 4 #15 January 4, 2006 QuoteI think I am just misconstruing what you are refering to as elitist. I was in a hurry. My point was, to a great extent, money not only can, but does, buy happiness. Food, shelter, clothing. For the cold, homeless and hungry, money buys a lot of happiness. Or at least, it would put a lot of people in the position of being able to determine whether they have it in them to be happy. But according to Stossel, it is a myth that "money can buy happiness." For the largest part of the world's population (and a good many people in this country), it's simply not true. He totally discounted those who are living in poverty for the purpose of making his point. Coming from a man who knows where his next meal is coming from, that's elitist. rlIf you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. GTAVercetti 0 #16 January 4, 2006 Alrighty. Usually when I think of the phrase "money can't buy happiness" I am forever linked to Brewster's Millions or something of that nature. Of LARGE sums of money. Like wanting to have Bill Gates bankroll. And believing that it alone will solve your problems and make you happy forever. Most people I know who use such a cliche are generally thinking in these terms. And I think that was the point he made. He even said that those who make under 30K would be happier making more, but that excessive amounts in and of itself does not make one happy. Now, combine money and friends and family and you got something. But I understand how you are seeing it. Now, who wants flapjacks? Why yes, my license number is a palindrome. Thank you for noticing. There are many more people in this world with incomes below $30k (much less $50k) than there are above. How friggin' elitist can you get? Those with money are far more capable of helping then those without. Such as Bill Gates who has given more than a Billion dollars to those in need not to mention thousands who have an income to support their families. Or maybe someone more respected by the left as Ted Turner who has or in the process of giving a Billion, and through hard work started CNN employing hundreds and providing incomes. Money doesn't buy happiness, but it sure can bring some happiness to those who are in need of it. A friend of mine I grew up with is a Surgen and makes more than $600K a year told me several years ago that money did'nt buy him happiness or a better quality of life because he lacked the time to experience its benefits. Maybe with the right kind of job that will pay more and which provides benefits and advancement oppertunities will provide you with a better quality of life.
