freethefly 6 #15 December 22, 2005 The Sun has been fusing hydrogen into helium and hence providing us with its radiant energy for 4.5 billion years, and it is expected to continue to do so for another 3 to 4 billion years more. And then what? As the sun gets older, it will fuse more and more hydrogen in its core. Once all of the hydrogen is turned into helium, the star stops fusing hydrogen and loses its ability to combat gravity. Then gravity begins to compress the Sun under its own weight again. The introduction of more compression causes the new helium particles inside of the core to collide hard enough so that they can stick together and fuse. The core thus begins to fuse helium into carbon to make enough energy to maintain its balance with the crushing force of gravity. The making of carbon, however, gives off more energy than did the making of helium. The energy being pumped out of the core radiates through the outer layers of the sun called the envelope. The introduction of too much energy into the envelope heats up the envelope particles so much that the envelope expands (for the same reasons that steam rises). At this point in its life, the Sun's envelope will expand to engulf all of the inner solar system out to Mars. The temperature will drop in the envelope as well, as the particles become so spread out that they no longer are colliding enough to create tremendous heat. A drop in temperature in a star can be seen in the change in the color of a star; cooler stars are redder than hotter, bluer stars. Thus, at this stage of its life, the Sun will be called a red giant. If you paid attention in science class, you would already know this. Physics explains everything. BillyVance 35 #16 December 22, 2005 I remember reading somewhere... not sure exactly where, I think it was a quote taken from Nostradamus that the world would end during the (number?)th pope's reign, which incidentally would be the next Pope after the one we have now. SpeedRacer 1 #19 December 22, 2005 Quote Well........... The Mayan long count calendar will reset to all zeros on Dec. 22nd,2012...........could be then and there..... why do so many people think the Mayans were so great at predicting things? Isn't this the same culture that managed to destroy itself long before the conquistadores showed up?? This is probably not the best culture to look to for predictions of the future. Not quite their fault they weren't drought resistant. Probably their fault that some of their major cities were located away from big water sources, though. SpeedRacer 1 #25 December 29, 2005 Got a new idea for a question: When will the end of the world predictions finally stop? I've been surfing the web & there are several sites that give a history of all previous end-of=the-world predictions. They all have ways of pointing at the Bible or the Mayan Calendar, or whatever, & twisting things around to back up their predictions. For example, there was a book by Hal lindsey called the Late Great Planet earth. Prediction: world will end in 1988. why? well he said it was supposed to take place within one generation of the formation of Israel. so 1948 + 40 = 1988. Now some others are shooting for 2007 (forty years after the 1967 war in which Israel claimed more territory) and the Mayan calendar puts it at I think Dec 22, 2012 or so. and there have been plenty of others that had the world end on other years, some in the past, some in the future. So, how long will we have to go before all the doomsayers finally STFU? will they run out of numerology tricks/biblical interpretations at a certain point, or not?
