Hope you have your Solstice Tree all decorated and your Solstice Lights done.:)

Thanks Kallend. My tree is up and decorated. Although, despite the origin of the tradition, it is in celebration of Christmas.
However, I wish you a happy Solstice too. B|

You too. ;) Although celebrating the shortest day of the year is a bit uneventful for my family, we prefer Christmas - the general celebration of an extremely influential mans birth.

But, Happy Holidays (which ever) to all!

It's all good to me

Carpe Diem

Merry Christmas John, hope you one day find something more meaningful to celebrate than just the shortest day of the year.

If the cycle of life in itself is not beautiful and meaningful to you, then I think we have the basis for another debate thread. ;)

You'll just be celebrating Saturnalia under an assumed name, as decreed by Pope Julius.:P

oh, the cycle of life is CERTAINLY beautiful and meaningful and worthy of celebrating MORE than just once a year. But a certain person's birth is even more important.

He may have decreed WHEN Christmas would be celebrated, but that is incidental... Christmas is STILL the celebration of the birth of Jesus, which far eclipses the importance of any other earthly celebration.

"So...are we going to do Stonehenge tomorrow night?"

What does she look like? Is she cute? I can't imagine anyone named Stonehenge to be attractive. Especially if it's a nick name.

An excellent idea! I used to celebrate with a 12-day festival of renewal, designed to help the god Marduk tame the monsters of chaos for one more year. But My Mesopotamian ways became unpopular once the Romans took over the hood. So once Emperor Aurelian established December 25 as the birthday of the "Invincible Sun" in the third century as part of the Roman Winter Solstice celebrations I swung that way. Then after the Romans fell out of favor and the Europeans were more popular I took up celebrating “Yule”, from the Norse, Jul, meaning wheel; the start of the solar year - a celebration of light and the rebirth of the Sun. Today, many people in Western-based cultures refer to this holiday as "Christmas." Hell, maybe I’ll just go buy some crap and give it to my friends and family…which was an idea started by merchants in the 1820’s to increase sales.

Ooh!! Informative!! Good post!!

Next year, the crap buying stops. I'm sick of it. I'd rather budget for an end-of-year shopping spree for myself - no returns, everything fits just right. B|

you've got to ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel loquacious?' -- well do you, punk?
