Holocaust comments spark outrage

Ahmadinejad's remarks echo other recent statements
International condemnation has greeted comments by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad that the Nazi Holocaust was "a myth".
Mr Ahmadinejad said he did not believe six million Jews had died at the hands of the Nazis last century.

Germany said his comments could harm attempts to restart nuclear talks.

A White House spokesman said the comments showed the need to "keep Iran from developing nuclear weapons".

"All responsible leaders in the international community recognise how outrageous such comments are," said spokesman Scott McClellan.

'Shocking' comments

Mr Ahmadinejad made the comments while speaking on live TV in the south-eastern city of Zahedan.

"They have created a myth today that they call the massacre of Jews and they consider it a principle above God, religions and the prophets," he said.

He called for Europe or North America - even Alaska - to host a Jewish state, not the Middle East.

German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier told reporters Mr Ahmadinejad's remarks were "shocking".

"I cannot deny that they may weigh on...the chances for the negotiations on the so-called nuclear dossier," he said.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel wants EU leaders to discuss Iran's stance
The German foreign ministry also said Chancellor Angela Merkel wanted to hold a meeting of EU leaders this week in Brussels to tell Iran "these remarks are totally unacceptable".

Israel's spokesman said the Iranian president's latest remarks reflected a "perverse vision of the world held by this regime".

The outburst by Mr Ahmadinejad follows earlier anti-Israeli comments.

He has brushed aside criticism of his views, saying it was orchestrated by supporters of Israel.

The president also returned to his earlier theme that Europe should shoulder the responsibility for a Jewish state.

"If you [Europeans] committed this big crime, then why should the oppressed Palestinian nation pay the price?

"This is our proposal: give a part of your own land in Europe, the US, Canada or Alaska to them so that the Jews can establish their country," he said.

Since his election in June, Mr Ahmadinejad has taken a more hardline stance towards Israel in public than his predecessors.

BBC Tehran correspondent Frances Harrison says the Iranian press has endorsed the president's views, calling them logical and less passive than the approach of previous Iranian governments.

Highfly I'd like to suggest changing the title of the thread to 'So now SOME Iranians don't believe it happened.'

If you knew any Iranians or had visited the country you would soon find that very few believe or endorse the official government line. The last election was met with apathy amongst the middle classes which led to very few of them voting. Added to that Ahmadinejad mainly campaigned about social issues including improving conditions for the most poor in society so questions over foreign policy were not raised that much, which means that views like this were not endorsed by the electorate.

agreed.
but its the government that openly calls for for the destruction of israel (and openly supports terror against it) that will soon have nukes.

I'm not worried about the Iranian people but i'm very worried about an Iranian extremist regime wite nukes...

Like to say thanks to the people who are able to determine that most Iranians do not feel that way.
If you knew how the Iranian elections worked you would know that he really was not what we view as an elected leader.

This guy is a murderer, and a thug. I have no respect for him or his kind of people.

I don't believe that Israel ever had to bomb the Iranian reactor, or that tens of thousands died when the enriched plutonium was released into the atmosphere, making the entire province permanently uninhabitable. Another myth cooked up by those whacky Iranians.

This is a very subtle in joke for any Farsi speakers on the forum or maybe just Darius11 in particular. I don't know how it will work when written in English as it depends on how one particular word sounds when written phonetically.

Anyway here goes...

Iranians have taken to calling the president Ahmaghinejad rather than Amadinejad.

The Israelis bombed the reactor in Iraq in the 80s. (Osirak). Today, Iraq is a desert. ;) Iraq was an oil-rich country and they needed nuclear power? Sure.

So now, there is Iran. An oil-rich country that wants to build a nuclear reactor. This is a personal guess, but I'll bet that Israel will wait until it is completed and bomb it. Any takers?

That seems unreasonable. That is why the Europeans sent them to Palestine. Then, the Palestinians objected.

My relatives have been living in the US for a couple of generations. If a group of us went back to Europe and demanded a province because our ancestors used to live there, it wouldn't sell well.

Bottom line? It's been 60 years. No one is leaving and that is the way that it will stay. People need to figure out how to live with each other on some basis.
