The purpose of emotions (while looking at them strictly from an evolution point of view).

Recommended Posts

Just a questions to the ones who do not believe in God or the concept of the human soul.

Ducks have webfeet so they can swim better, Camels have humps to survive the desert.

Why did we develop such deep emotions?

Wouldn’t it be easier to survive if we did not have emotions?

Just something I have been thinking about

Emotions are biochemical.

Fear is pretty critical to survival.

Love is a protective reaction to fear covers nurturing young and species continuation.

Anger is a protective reaction to fear.

Everything else kinda bounces off that fear thing.

TV's got them images, TV's got them all, nothing's shocking.

>Why did we develop such deep emotions?

Love between child and mother - helps ensure the mother (and father to a lesser degree) protects the young; this helps them survive

Love/lust between two adults - helps ensure that they reproduce and that the child reaches an age where it can live on its own with two protectors

Hate - a social instinct that allows cooperation against a common enemy

Affection - helps a community live togther in a small space, making defense, food gathering etc easier.

Altruism - helps communities survive by encouraging the stronger members to help the weaker in times of plenty.

Greed - helps ensure we have food, shelter, warmth etc when those things are scarce. A greedy family survives hard times better than a family who does not care.

>Wouldn’t it be easier to survive if we did not have emotions?

We'd just sit around until we died. The species wouldn't last long.

what the hell do emotions have to do with genetic design?

That’s my questions.

Why did we develop such complex emotions that effect our lives?
It does not serve a purpose in surviving so if evolution is the only answer (it is not for me) how would we explain emotions and why we developed them?

Well, either that or PMS. That anger has nothing to do with fear

There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)

but what about the other "forms" of love... how about love as a decision? I realize this goes beyond the scope of the question, but humans can chose to "love" their enemies.

God created us with emotions, for reasons none of us will ever know. I do see though, that emotions can be pretty powerful--either for the good or the bad.
When people tend to base their decisions on emotions rather than the thought process, usually those decisions are not made very well.

Perhaps you mixed something?

Anyhow, every year the same couple of ducks is visiting my little pond behind the house - I tell you, they are somewhat full of emotions :P while doing their family planning :).

Or do you intend to say, our lifes would be much better without any emotions?

And instead of this a pair of duck pedals?
Or a nice little humpback...

Please, provide a few more details about meaning of your post :)

If we had no emotions only instinct to build a house take care of our young, and have sex once every 9 months to reproduce I think things would be much easier. There would be no thought, just impulse, and instinct.

Sorry Christel I know my English writing skills are not good.

Basically I would like someone who only believes in evolution to explain why we developed such deep emotions and feelings. Strictly from an evolution point of view.

Personally I believe in God and the human soul, But I am also not closed minded and like hearing what others opinions are.

WRONG, emotions serve a very useful purpose in surviving both as individuals and as a species.

That is exactly what i told my girlfriend. :)

Seriously, those emotions help us to live in society and take care of our genetic pool. Animals have emotions as well, although probably not as developed due to the lack of language.

In many cases what we call emotion is the equivalent to an animal instinct in other species.

Can I ask why it scares you?

Sure its not pretty and evolved, but certainly fits the available evidence.
