Honen, Shinran (Jodo sects) and Nicheren (Lotus sects and variations like SGI) were a result of that, and obviously met a need during terrible times in japanese history....shinran and nicheren were really hard-assed too! to them it was 'my way or the highway(--to hell)' the buddha way is originally more of a psychology and morality/ethics that goes beyond any religious belief.
