wmw999 2,589 #2 December 7, 2005 This is an action that will benefit a lot of people, but it sure doesn't make Hugo Chavez a great man. He's a pandering semi-dictator who is more than willing to bend his country's political process to stay in power. He does so in part with exactly that kind of gesture -- something that makes poor people think they have more power than they really do. No one pays attention to poor people until they vote. Chavez is willing to buy votes with attention and cheap oil. However, it really doesn't make him a great man. Wendy W.There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. Trent 0 #3 December 7, 2005 While it is outrageous that our own oil companies haven't done anything, do not mistake Chavez's motivations behind this to be anything but a shot to the US and a bid to make himself look like a "man of the people", even when crime is out of control and people are starving to death in his own country. I said it before about his last heating oil thing... Schumer, Clinton, and Serrano just made themselves bitches to Chavez's propaganda.Oh, hello again! masterblaster72 0 #5 December 7, 2005 QuoteSchumer, Clinton, and Serrano just made themselves bitches to Chavez's propaganda Not really. The article states Quote In October, 12 Democratic US senators, including Hillary Rodham Clinton, urged chief executives of major oil companies to help with fuel assistance programmes run by the government. The senators said that the only company to respond was Citgo... Clinton was representing her constituents in asking oil companies to do their part. Whether Chavez took advantage or not doesn't much matter to those who will be warm this winter. I applaud Clinton and the other Democratic senators for doing what they did in October, though I am reluctant to cheer Chavez because his tightening grip on democracy troubles me. But his decision will help people nonetheless. That's more than we can say about any steps our own administration has taken, and that's sad. Embarrassing too. I think the bigger point is the one you already made, that I very strongly agree with: Quoteit is outrageous that our own oil companies haven't done anything Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up. I do not think that it is the job of the "administration" to know the needs of every single apartment or housing block in the country. That is why congressmen and senators are there... and in this case, they did what they should have and asked for help for some of their constituents. If it were me, I would have put more pressure on our own oil companies before accepting Chavez's offer, because I do know what that fuckstick is up to. I'm sure there's some saying about it being dangerous to take handouts from the devil...Oh, hello again!
rhino 0 #7 December 8, 2005 Who said anything about him being a great man? I'm happy about the fact that he did it in spite of Bush and his cronies.. He DID a good thing. I don't really give a fuck what his motives were.. People get to be warm this winter that wouldn't have been able to afford to because of people like Bush. kallend 2,150 #8 December 11, 2005 I don't know if the following (which I got from an aviation list) is true or not. Does anyone know? any idea why hemp is illegal in the US? Bet you can guess! :) Oil (supplies to chemical companies) and chemical companies (which make plastics and other artifical fibers from oil) lobbied to have it made illegal to grow. This actually started before WWII but lost momentum when hemp was needed for rope during the war. In turn, they helped launch a great PR campaign whereby most now people think hemp = pot. Most people do not realize that industrial hemp, should you smoke it, will give you a killer, smack your head with a hammer headache, and can not make you high; nor can it be refined to do so. Furthermore, in the last decade, true 0% THC (the active ingredient in pot) industrial hemp is now available. What does this have to do with fuel? Well, hemp can grow in just about any zone in the US, and is a great supply of ethanol! In fact, hemp yields roughly twice the ethanol production per acre than does corn. Hemp does not require pesticides and is drought resistant. Given the most advance ethanol producing technology, corn based ethanol, at best, is break even. To boot, hemp oil can be used for both kitchen and industrial uses. Hemp is also edible. ... The only sure way to survive a canopy collision is not to have one.
